Water in my shower plug hole

Hi,

I was just cleaning my shower cubicle and I noticed that the plug hole was filled with water. Its not right up to the top of the pipe, but the surface of the water is about an inch or so down.

Is this normal? I have no idea how long it has been like that, but it doesn't smell and it hasn't overflowed when I have used the shower.....

Thank you.

  • Underneath your plug you have what is called a trap, this holds water and stops smells.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene.'
  • So, perfectly normal then?

    Yes, it's normal.
    Happy chappy
  • Here's a link explaining how and why you have them

...doesn't sound like it's blocked yet but might need a clean anyway. The pink screwdriver isn't necessary (we've had discussion on pink tools before ...where's heather!!)..nor the fella's toothbrush!

  • Phew! Thanks for that!

I only moved in a week ago and so far my boiler has broken and my washing machine stinks of soil (Streptomyces to be precise). If my shower plug hole was blocked as well, I think I'd just cry!

An inch from the plughole sounds rather too high to me.

Does the water drain away immediately when you shower or does a puddle form in the shower tray?

Mmmm - smelly washing machine, sounds as though the previous occupants might not have been too clean. In that case I'd be tempted to pour some soda crystals down all the plug holes as a precautionary measure.

    sounds perfect to me

most shower tray traps have a water seal of around 65mm to prevent foul smells

if the water flows away when the shower is used and does not collect water on the base of the tray then you have no problems

If you have a smelly washing machine check the waste pipe from the machine is going over the top of the base unit but under the worktop. In other words the pipe needs to have a point higher than the fixed waste pipe otherwise there is a chance of foul water going into your machine and causing bad smells.
    Good Luck.
