Hey pip not quite recoverd yet, hence the late night. I find if I stay up late until I cnt keep my eyes open then I can get some sleep lol.

The hedy found his way into our garden, when I threw some of my cake out for the birds. It loved my cake so much it kept coming back for more and was not impressed when I put out cat food lol.

Hi ZLS; hope recover soon and that all is o.k.! - personally found would rather stay up late 'on board' and nod off in early hours rather than go to bed earlier and not sleep - what you say is so interesting as have heard for some time to put cat food out - will now also put out more 'bird cake' lower down so hopefully hedgies will see and want to eat also - what was in your cake?

    Hi Pip26

Yes apparantly you shouldn't put whole peanuts out. I put mine in my mixer and ground them down first. Even bread we should put out moist, because when it is dry it expands in their tummies.

Amazing what you say about the animals feeding from your hand!!! Wow, I have never experienced anything like that. The black bird which sat on my Arbour was funny because every time I passed it to hang my washing on the line, I used to say to it as I passed, "hello little boy". It just looked at me and put it's head down. So whenever I see one on the fence I say the same thing and it never flies away. The others do but not this certain one so I assume it may be the same one, you can never be sure.

Yes I was devasted when I lost our Guinness. We have no children so he was our baby. I always said I taught him the english language. So so many stories I could tell people. A lot of our family and friends always said he was human. I wish I could write a book about him. But I have never done anything like that before so I will have to just have my memories.

What a great link, thank you!

As this year I shall not send many Christmas cards (only to people far away and who do not have emails) I have sent it as a Christmas greeting to all my friends!

Fantastic post...great family video with a serious message. Our little boy loves to encourage and feed the wildlife..seedcake,nuts,cereal, raisins..etc..plus the birds (and other animals) love the windfall apples which we save loads of in piles to feed them throughout the winter. Thanks for posting and happy Christmas!
  • :T Hi There, Many thanks for the link, it is great to watch and spreads a really worth while message. I have passed the link on to my family so again many thanks.
We are very lucky to live out in the countryside and we are mad about wildlife. We have counted that in the three years we have lived here we have had nineteen different species of birds. Although they are eating us out of house and home, we spend a fortune on wild bird seed and peanuts which we buy in the big sacks as it works out cheaper. I think they are better fed than we are!! But they give us so much pleasure, I cannot imagine a world without our garden birds, just think of the silence!
By the way it is o.k to put whole peanuts out we do each morning, but during the breeding season it is better to stop as the babies can choke on them. Usually a bird will hold the nut between their claws and nibble bits off, they don't just swallow the whole thing. We had a very funny thing happen a few months back, a robin flew into our living room, the front door was open and he must have come to say hello. Anyway he flies in and lands on the top of the t.v right nest to a robin ornament I have there. He landed and looked at this other robin and did a double take, I have never seen anything so funny!!
    Merry Christmas Everone Becky xxxx

Hi Becs - heard a programme on Radion 4 the other day where they were saying although people have always put whole nuts out, it is danerous for some birds but people don't realise. The programme also included that were taking steps to stop them being sold whole for birds unless they are in a feeder where the birds peck bits off and the whole nut can't come out.

My claim to bird fame was a pheasant that appeared from nowhere one morning (am in urban area) and got completey tame - would come in every day and eat from hand & would actually come and tap at window. Unfortunatly one morning didn't come & had disappeared never to be seen again!!!!!

Your robin thing was v. funny, oh! to have a camera at the right time!!!!!!
