Thanks, yes I have ticked the boxes as well.

I make my bird cakes different to the ones they had on their website. I buy the large hessian (if that is how you spell it) bags of plain nuts and keep it in the garage till empty. I buy bags and bags of flour, pounds and pounds of lard and bags and bags of sultanas. I mix the flour and lard together, add the nuts, mix again in the mixer and then add the sultanas. I then put each batch in a very large mixing bowl and make balls out of the mixture. Each morning, afternoon and evening I put them out on top of my garage/bird table/grass and watch them scoff the lot.

On summer evenings when they have their last fly of the day, I stand in the middle of my garden and it is amazing to watch them... They fly and swoop right down to where I am standing as if to say "Thank You". They make a noise as well.

One year I had a young sparrow who for some reason didn't fly. I put a piece of duvet down with some water and food under my Arbour until it got better. Also a black bird stayed on the Arbour seat for days and I am sure it still comes back, because one never flies away when I open the back door. I also had a one legged starling.

To think I only noticed all of this happening when I started feeding them after loosing my dear friend Guinness my wonderful dog of 16 yrs.

I found this video on Youtube I had only just come out of hospital and it made me laugh so hard I though I was going to split my staples.

I agree fantastic message, I have a hedghog house made from an old car seat in my garden. I am also going to hang out the seed cake that I got free so that the birds have something to eat. When I did my garden in the summer I made sure it was hedghog friendly as we had a spikey visitor, sadly he did not stay in the house I made him but I am sure he will be back in the summer.

Hi Dips - so sorry to hear to hear about Guiness, pets mean so much to people and it is easy for others to under estimate.

Not a pet (although do have house rabbit who, unfortunately is v. poorly and on last legs and have been so used to her hopping about the place for the last seven years, boo hoo) but a complete mystery as live just outside London and had pheasant (!!!!!!) who suddenly appeared in garden. Stayed for ages, became so tame would be (rather, leap!!!) at the window having heard the curtains being drawn every morning and would come in and take sunflower seeds from hand or rabbit bowl every morning. Rabbit which is v. nervous of other animals was not bothered by her in the slighest - I used to think, 'here I am in London with rabbit, pheasant and tame squirrell' (who arrived at more or less same time) all taking food from hand and enjoying each others company!!!!!!!!

Did you see post Re: Green Balloon?

In last couple of days got bird cakes for both of my nephews to hang out plus stickers with a message for them!

Have come from family where parents used to look after (and be passed from others) wounded birds including duck and moorhen (!!!) aswell as garden birds which we fed then released. Lovely to hear you have helped birds survive and so glad to hear you feed the birds and that you go to so much trouble - wish more people did. They are saying thankyou to you and it is lovely for us to watch them. Like you say in Spring/Summer, I sometimes get home and think won't put telly or radio on, just enjoy opening doors and listening to birds!

Heard interesting thing on Radio 4 other day that whole peanuts shouldn't be put out - something I have always done but apparanlty all types of birds die each year from ingesting whole peanuts. Some oranisations are campaigning to stop them being sold - apparantly crushed ones are alright but for years I've been putting the whole ones out.

Birds had seemed to like them but will crush from now on just to make sure!!

    Pip.
