Works sometimes comes with Word as a cost option, so you may or may not have it. Wordpad uses a very basic subset of the Word functionality, so can read and write documents in Word format, but again it will not allow some of the more complicated features.
If you just need to view the Word documents, the Word viewer mentioned elsewhere works fine. If you need to write documents in the Word format (.doc or .rtf), then you can use any number of packages. The free one with the most functionality is OpenOffice (mentioned elsewhere), and there are even websites that give you an online word processor...Jumbo
