  • Usually, if you have works on your pc, it is bundled with word also but maybe not. You should be able to do most word functions in works tho. do a search for winword.exe if you have that then you have word.

If you don't have Word already, you can download a free Microsoft Word viewer straight from MS. It will let you open and read (and print) word documents, but you won't be able to change/edit them.

    Find the free download HERE

I dont think you can download word free from anywhere as its part of Microsoft Office which costs a bomb but there is software available called open Office which is free, it lets you open all microsoft formats edit them and save them in any format ie word docs excel files etc and it is free, it is a very good program. It works and feels like Microsoft Products.

It does not install any spyware on your system either.
Take a look at it here.Open Office Org - free office aplications similar to word, excel and publisher

This is a little bit taken from the site for the word like component of the software:
WRITER has everything you would expect from a modern, fully equipped word processor or desktop publisher. The Wizards takes all the hassle out of producing standard documents such as letters, faxes, agendas, minutes, or carrying out more complex tasks such as mail merges. You are of course free to create your own templates. ... ...Save your documents in OpenDocument format, the new international standard for office documents. This XML based format means you're not tied in to WRITER. You can access your documents from any OpenDocument compliant software. WRITER can of course read all your old Microsoft Word documents, or save your work in Microsoft Word format for sending to people who are still locked into Microsoft products.

    Hope this helps you

  • Depends what the course is. If it's about learning Word, there's no point using an alternative application. If it's just for writing course notes etc., then any word processor will do, including Wordpad and Works.

If it must be Word, and doesn't have to be the latest version, then buy Office 97 (includes Word) off eBay for about £15 (make sure it's a genuine CD though).

Works does not come with Word. You cannot view documents written using Works with Word.

From the looks of that you are probably going to have to submit an electronic copy of your coursework (e.g. emailing the file). It must be in a format Microsoft Word can read so I'm guessing .rtf files (which Wordpad - free with Windows - writes) will be OK as Word can read them.

But you might want to look at this open office that others are suggesting as it includes things like a spell checker.

Sorry mate but i've had 2 pcs that came with works and word, they were both pcs that were built by a company (e.g dell, packard bell) and usually, if you get works then generally you get word as well (not always tho).

Never actually said that the files were interchangable, just observing that works comes with a "word processor" function.
