Broadband speed

I have recently upgraded from a broadband speed of 600 to 1meg with NTL

The question is: how do I know they have upgraded me, I can't really tell any difference.

This then got me to thinking, how does anyboby know if they are receiving these super-speeds that the internet providers say/promise?

Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks
RB

You can test your speed via tools on some websites such as https://www.adslguide.org or http://www.dslreports.com/tools. Don't be surprised if yours is lower than the quoted "theoretical" speed.

    try this

    http://www.irishisptest.com/myspeed/

the speed you get depends on the qualtiy of your line and how far you are away from your exchange so don't expect the full speed - you won't get it!

The Irish site seems really good, the download speed is coming up right but the up-load speed is just over 100 kbs

I wonder why the up-load speeds are only 10% of the download speeds?

If anybody has any ideas I would be pleased to hear them.

Should I contact my internet provider?

    Thanks

you have ADSL... all ADSL lines have a downlod speed which is faster than download speed... its just the way it is.. all ISPs do this. i'm not sure what NTL have made their upload speed, but i would have thought its around 250kbps... where you downloading/uploading anything else when you done the test other than the irishBB website?

also, click ctrl+alt+del.. networking>view>network addaptor history>(tick "bytes sent").. wait aroung 2-3 mins, look at your connection... the red-line should be below than 1% when the computer's idle.
if it is less than 1%, call NTL tech.support.
if its continuously above 1% when the computers idle and you are not downloading/uploading anything, do a windows update, virus and spyware scan.

Cable connections don't decrease over distance so you can be as far away as you want - unlike adsl.

Depending on your cable modem - if you enter http://192.168.100.1 in your browsers address bar, the modems config page appears.
When promted enter root as username and password.

In one of the options (the bottom option - link) on the left column, if you click it it will give you your connection speed according to ntl.

The first four digits of your download speed should be 1024 - means 1MB connection.

If not then your still on your old speed.

Shut down pc, unplug Cable Modem. Wait about 30 seconds. Plug Cable Modem back in. Wait for lights to steady. Turn PC back on. Do another speed test.

If no change. Call ntl to send a config to your Cable Modem to update it correctly. This is done instantly while on the phone.

    Hope this helps.
