Its almost definatley a scam, anyone who calls you specifically shouldnt expect you to press any buttons to proceed.

It could be legit. I know that mbna use this type of automated service to contact customers who either missed a payment or (as in my case) didn't pay enough.

We had this a few weeks ago. I was on holiday and I didn't have my statement with me. I'd forgotton to pay so went into the bank and paid what I thought I was due so as to avoid a late payment charge. I didn't pay enough by £2! 3 weeks later the automated calls started. I thought it was a scam but when I called them up (on the number I had and on my terms) I was told they do this.

As d.edna says, give them a call on the number on your statement. If you're not a customer of theirs, either ignore it or call them anyway (do a search for a legit number) and let them know of the problem...they may have your tel number muddled with someone else, (or write to them).

Egg use an automated system too.
You press any key (I think) to start but then have to progess through a menu pressing specific keys.
When they have called me it has always been to check that the use of a card on my account has been legitimate.

Actually quite annoying in that they will say something like, "please confirm that £25.09 at a fuel station in the UK is correct" or "£329.98 at an electronic store in the UK is correct". As it's never my use of the card, I really need more information than the type of establishment and that it is somewhere in the whole of the UK!

If you don't "confirm", you do then get to speak to a human being who may be able to provide more information.

Outragious I pray they aren't stupid enough to ring me on their "press this button for me" ssytem. I REFUSE point blank to have some machine phone me up and tell me to press this that or the other.

    SCAM!

    SCAM!

Unfortunately they may well then decide to put a block on your card and you then have to get it unblocked, which takes more time and is very inconvenient - or you start using a different card and never use the blocked card again.

Id rather they block my card so I can opt to go elsewhere, to a company that offers "human" telephone calls when calling me, ESPECIALLY when they are dealing with something as important as my financial security.

Press button no.1 if you are the account holder, press button no 2 if you are not. It also says its against either the law or data protection act to press button no 1 if you are not the account holder
