'Locking' a 3 phone to a network (LG 8120)?

Hi All,
This is my cherry-popping post, so go easy on me!
I got a 3 phone (LG 8120) and contract yesterday.
I noticed that I get full reception when it switches to a 2G network - what network is this? O2?
Also, can I program the phone to lock it into this network? I know you can't do this by default, but there must be a way around it - maybe unlocking the phone and relocking it to O2 (or whatever the 2G network is)? I know this was possible with the older phones, so I presume it's just a hardware thing?
Cheers!

Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
