Sky/BT line cancellation without reason

  • Just to clarify something, there are multiple companies called BT. Dont go assuming its anything to do with BT Retail until told otherwise.

As it stands if you want line rental with Sky THEY have to deal with it, if BT Retail switch it back on its a new contract with them.

BT told me they (Sky) should contact BT Openreach wholesale, does that sound correct? Many Thanks again

Thanks guys its a major help. I have dealt with the nuances of both companies recently and also having worked for Sky I know how their systems (technically) work, and also that Retentions should be able to do something. I think its a case of getting a 'responsible and knowledgeable Manager to escalate in the correct way'.
  • Yep.

Wholesale 'own' the lines and rent them on. Openreach are the engineers who do the work. Retail are the ame as Talk Talk, Sky, Tiscal ect in they rent them from Wholesale and on to you, the end user.

Bt recentily termianted my phone line- in error -which meant my bt broadband contract was terminated too. It was a total nightmanre and i lost my broadband for 7 days.
Since then we have had nothing but problems with bt -final bills etc and charged £160 for terminating the contract. They have now refunded that but I am far from happy with them.
My total sympathise with yourself, they are a nightmare to deal with. I have thought about writing to ofcom but am unsure what they would do.
  • That's terrible, I'm glad you had the charges refunded, but at the same time they should never have been levied in the first place.

I certainly wouldn't hesitate for an instant to contact Ofcom, that's exactly what they're there for. It's also very important that the regulator is aware of problems in the industry like this. If this is happening to people on a regular basis, Ofcom will be able to approach BT or other telecommunications companies involved so that the 'glitch' is ironed out of the system.

Regardless of whether it's Sky's fault or BT's fault Sky are behaving most dishonourably and are not providing any customer care. You are being left to fend for yourself because there's a systems failure at their end.

It's no different from turning around and saying: "sorry, your line blew down, can you just arrange to get a step ladder and some tools and look up how to fix it online. Thank you for calling!"

    Hello there
Sorry if I have miss read this but,

I understand that you said you have "no contract" with BT

If you have the Sky package then in order for Sky to give you a phone package you have to have a BT line set up.

You pay BT £10.50 per month for line only, plus you pay Sky for the broadband and any calls made.

I wonder if when you stopped paying BT last year that they have kept your line open in error and have now found this out, that you have not been paying line rental of £10.50 and they have cut you off

    sorry if I'm talking rubbish

Yes, I think you are! :)

Read "Drunkstar's" two posts (just a few above yours)

You can rent your "BT phone line" from BT Retail, Sky, Madasafish, The Post Office, The Phone Coop etc etc. These lines are all actually supplied by BT Wholesale but unless you use BT Retail you do not have any contract with "BT".

In the OP's case he rents his line from Sky and he has no contract with BT.

IMHO BT Retail should be forced to change name

    Thanks LardyCake
I'm not very clued up re all this tech

I'm moving soon and want to go over to a Sky package and was told I had to get a BT line and to pay BT £10.50pm, then Sky could charge me for the calls.

There was no other option given to me, I do not really want to go back to BT
I'm at the moment with Virgin cable but my new address is not in a cable area
    thanks

well if anyone is on benefits at youe new address get BT Basic For approx £15 a quarter & choose broadband from whoever

try Heinz program if you have to take BT, Primus 18185 etc....

and avoid Virgin @ all costs on Virgin non-cable ADSL internet/call packages - broadband is slow as hell
