                    with mobile phones, not much of the uk services are able to work there such as video calling etc

            Well it's more to do with the network.
 If you got a mobile from the states on one of their networks you could have all that stuff.0
- 
            For mbile phone companies there are 2 business models;
 1) Subsidised handsets and more expensive calls (UK contract model) or
 2) Full price hand sets and cheaper calls.
 The thing with model 1 is that people want to upgrade their phone at the end of each contract and want better phones every time which drives the companies to offer more and more facilities. Whereas in model 2 because people have to pay so much for their phones they hang on to them a lot longer so it takes longer for advances to happen. Thats why a lot of 2nd hand UK handsets end up in places like Cyprus which operates model 2.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
