barclays monthly saver (7.75%)

i've been reading the forum for a while and I find it most useful. I never intended to actually post anything, but I do have something useful to say (I hope).

the barclays monthly saver rate is being advertised at 6%, however I went down to the branch today to set one up, figuring all my variable rate savers are going to drop anyway, and I was told by the advisor that new accountS will still get the 7.75% rate if the first deposit is made during December.

The advisor said the branch had received a message to that effect.

I asked her to print it out for me. she couldn't but she did show the message to me on screen, so I have no reason to doubt it. The rate I receive will apparently be shown on my monthly statement, so if that says 6% I'll be back down there.

I'm about to set up my first standing order for a couple of days' time.

  • See if you can get it in writing. The letter you get saying congratulations etc for setting up the account is full of words and music, but nowhere does it say the RATE you will get, only that it is fixed!

Wow, really?! That's good news! I opened this account on 1st December when the rate had just lowered to 6%. I opened it online and linked it to my Barclays current acc and didn't see any notices or wasn't sent any emails about the 7.75% rate.

Will definitely be checking my interest carefully when my statement is ready!
    Thanks!

I've just opened one today, based on this thread.

After quite a bit of debate and looking at their internal systems, they got a manager to write me a short letter confirming the 7.75% rate. They would not give me a print out of the information they were able to view on screen but did make one to staple to their copy of the manager's letter!

They did agree it was far from clear.

I've just opened one now (online), although I have no idea if I'm going to get the 7.75% rate... Just gotta wait and see!

Surprisingly, I haven't seen any other threads about this "special deal"... Has anyone got any further clarification on whether or not they are still offering that 7.75% rate?

I suggest you do as I did (see post 4). I was told the 7.75% applies to accounts opened and funded this month. I would have thought with a letter from a branch manager they would have to honour it!
  • Thanks for posting about this. I'm going to go in branch on Monday to ask about this as if it's true (what I mean is if they will honour the 7.75%), it'll be worth opening.

Does anyone know whether faster payments work from HSBC/Egg to Barclays? I've never banked with Barclays before.

They do work from HSBC to Barclays... I just used it a couple of days ago to deposit my first monthly amount into my new Monthly Savings.

Can anyone confirm the OP news, please?
  • Alan,

Uncertain, in posts 4 and 7, confirms what I said.
