barclays monthly saver (7.75%)

I'm out of the country, so can't really pop into a branch at the moment... however, i'm sure others will be popping into their branches today to check up on this "special deal", and am hoping that they will be able to shed some clarity on this matter. It would, after all, be a pretty good deal considering the state of current savings rates.I suggest you do as I did (see post 4). I was told the 7.75% applies to accounts opened and funded this month. I would have thought with a letter from a branch manager they would have to honour it!0 -
Slightly out of question, but...
if you set up a standing order to take £20 sometime at the beginning of the month i.e. £20 on 12 December, would it be too late to pay in another £100-£150 (less than £250 total) via standing order into this account? Would there be penalties or loss of interest against that additional amount?
I rang Barclays, but the guys were in India!!! (tried different numbers and still no luck, call centre people still in India) and they said it was okay, but just curious whether that would work or not? :eek:0 -
Just been into a local branch and spoke to the manager who knew nothing about the higher rate but would give me the 6% or ..... if i could bring him a print out of the details from the internet would look into it further.
Never had dealings with this bank before but if I do open an account it won`t be in that branch cos for a manager his people skills were very sadly lacking!0 -
I think the key here is to find out whether there is a specific instruction to all branches to extend the offer of the 7.75% rate up to the end of the month, or whether the message that fanheater and Uncertain saw/heard in their branches was just mere outdated information which the Barclays representative misunderstood as current and valid information.Just been into a local branch and spoke to the manager who knew nothing about the higher rate but would give me the 6% or ..... if i could bring him a print out of the details from the internet would look into it further.
I wish I could get to a branch to find out!0 -
Has anyone managed to get something formal/official on this matter? Don't we have any Barclays employees amongst MSE's?0

Interesting development.
Martin's article mentions beware of Barclays staff trying to flog you more products. I think I was lucky all I was asked was I interested in opening a Barclays current account to be able to do on-line banking, an offer I refused."When the Government borrows, the citizen has to save".

Reports today indicate that to qualify for the 7.75% rate, the account should have been opened before end of November and the first payment made by end of December. I think we need the MSE team to seek further clarification on this matter and update the article accordingly... otherwise a lot of people are going to be misled and left disappointed around this time next year!Have a look at the main MSE savings article which has just been updated (scroll down to "can you put money aside every month" at

no worries Tibbledom, it's a service I offer. glad people are looking into it.
intalex, can I ask where you saw accounts needed to be opened in November? for what it's worth, this is the gist of the message on Barclays' website (if you click on the link to see interest rates, it also show the *previous* one, which it says finished at the end of november

Fanheater, I found the same link you posted and it states that the 7.75% only applies to accounts opened before the 30/11/08.
Perhaps they changed the text after you set your up? Is that the case?0
