Sky Broadband Speed/ Reliability

Hello,
We currently have a BT line and Virgin ADSL Broadband 8mb. Our contract is about to expire and we want to change as we feel the virgin service has been rubbish. Lots of interruptions, slow service, no where near 8mb, on the speed check I've been getting 1.2mb.
I have a 02 mobile contract and have heard really good things about their broadband service so I rang them today. Unfortunately they checked my phone number and postcode and they don't have the service unbundled in my area yet. On the website it stated "We've estimated that your maximum download speed is 5 meg. This is based on information BT gave us about your BT line". They have advised I take their out of area 8mb service for £17 a month.
We have decided after Christmas to get Sky TV and I noticed their deals with Talk and Broadband are very cheap and would be convenient if I got this at the same time. Even anyone can help I've got a few questions;
1/ Does anyone know if I will be able to get a faster connection with this service than I would have with my Virgin ADSL or will it probably be just the same?
2/ If BT are telling 02 my best connection will be 5mb, is there any point getting 16mb with Sky or should I just go for 8mb. Will it make a difference?
3/ Does anyone have any feedback about sky broadband, is it reliable?
4/ I want as fast a broadband service as I can get. I don't mind paying a few pound extra if it's fast. Will any ISP's be faster than others or will they be all pretty much the same?
I find this so confusing, if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
Regards, Matt.

Is Sky in your exchange? If not you will be put onto a rebranded BT service, speed wise you should get the same as suggested by O2. The only difference taking a higher package would make would be download limits.
Been with Sky just over a year now, had 2 occassions in 12 months where the connection dropped and re-synched for no apparent reason but then our telephone wiring is about 30 years old.0
