Would you consider emigrating if the recession gets really bad here in the UK?

I'm wondering if a lot of people are going to be leaving the UK in the next few years? If job prospects are bad and we face either deflation or inflation won't quality of life in the UK become pretty awful. Its been reported that the UK economy is going to be one of the worst affected with a long, drawn out recession. Also, if the pounds becomes worth less and less it will be harder to leave since you will have to pay more to move as other currencies gain strength. The UK will start to look less and less attractive with its high taxes, rubbish interest rates, bad quality of life compared to many other western countries and bad weather to boot. So, would you consider emigrating if things get a lot worse?

Where to, what countries won't be effected.
  • A bit too late on the currency front, methinks.

Otherwise, a maybe. Need redundancy to fund the move.

    I've been Money Tipped!
We are, reluctantly, not dismissing it as an option. :(

It would be interesting if any of that was true, I think you may be cheering the bad weather when global warming takes more of a hold :D

Sorry, I'm one of those people who think global warming (as in made by humans) is a myth. Global cooling is another matter...
  • I left uk 7 months ago, the best thing I ever did- well one of the best anyway. If you have to be skint then its much more fun in the sun!! Exchange rates don't really matter if you work in the country that you live in.

I used to find it funny with Shane Warne smothering his face with sun blocker whilst playing at the Oval, I always wondered what he did when he was at home :D

i always thought that.. england is pretty cold normally... if global warming causes rises things will be bad but not as bad as places that are typically warm already - Australia, florida etc.

Exchange rates matter if you're using savings (in pounds) to fund settling into your new country.

I've emigrated once already (from the US to the UK). I would be very unlikely to emigrate now because I don't want to go through that all over again. You really do leave most of your old life behind and it's hard to imagine what that's like -- losing all the little interconnections and familiar things about your old life -- until you've done it.

However, if things did start looking apocalyptic (not just the economy but the environment as well -- I do believe in manmade global warming) we might reconsider.
