Strange noise from clutch

I have a 2004 Mondeo TDCi and noticed this morning that my clutch is making a strange noise when its cold.
Now no laughing please but basically whenever I release the clutcth there is a noise that I can only describe as a duck's quack!(very embarassing when pedestrians look around for ducks before realising its my car!) It is only when I release the clutch and seems to disappear after a good few miles when the car has warmed up fully. No other problems at all is driving great (touch wood) and clutch doesn't seem to be particularly high or anything.
Any idea's on what it might be and is it a sign that my clutch will soon need replacing?

  • they are pricey, how many ymiles has it done
  • sounds like the thrust bearing is on its way out. with a bit of heat in it, its releasing properly.

basically it will make more sounds and then let you down. You might as well replace the clutch while your there as the cost will not be a great deal more.

    common problem.
  • Its only done35000 (and no Im not heavy on clutch never had to have one replaced before) had a feeling clutch might be on it's way out but as its driving so well and not having any other clutch related problem I was hoping it might not be but there you go I shouldn't be surprised at car problems cropping up just before Christmas its just my luck at the moment! Any idea's on cost anyone??

  • is it coming from the actual clutch pedal or is it from the clutch itself?

i used to have a van that has a noisey clutch pedal return spring,it would be noisey sometimes and quiet other times?
    ...work permit granted!
  • it will cost about 200 - 250 depending on the clutch plate that fitted to the motor, theres more than one type fitted to that motor.

it should last for a while yet if moneys tight this side of christmas.
  • Goldspanners I don't think it is coming from the pedal as I can hear it louder if I have the window open so am guessing its from the clutch itself whereever that is.
Thanks Bungle4x4 thats not as bad as I though phew!!!!
I've just been out and tried it again after being parked up since 2pm and nothing at all (and its v cold outside now) very strange Maybe the ducks have gone to sleep for the night! Will have to see how it is in the morning! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

  • lol, i will but it wont help :)

don't go near the dealer, they will rob you blind. a nice friendly, local bloke is what you want.
  • If anyone can suggest a nice friendly bloke in Bolton area I would be very grateful!!!
Alternatively any suggestions on questions etc I can ask so that I don't seem like a completely car ignorant female would help. ( I know more about tech spec of an F1 car than I do about my own Mondeo!)

Try J & A Motors on All Saints Street. Its just behind Stanley/Mint Casino, ive just had my MOT done and a couple of other bits and bobs, he's a genuine bloke and i trust him, which is more than i can say for most mechanics. If you go, you can say i sent you, tell him 'the guy with the green rover 25'
