Sneaky last second bidders

General Tojo
You are missing the words ITEM YOU MUST HAVE.
Let us take the example of the French pamphlet. You would have bid about 50 euros for it and lost it. I got the thing for 40 euros. My max bid was 600 euros. If you MUST have thre item, the disaster is not the amount you pay, the disaster is not getting the item at all.
If you had bid your 50 euros on that pamphlet and I had bid my 600 euros, I would have won the item, and you would have not. Since that item is probably the only one of its kind on the planet, you would be at something of a disadvantage. You see my biography would have had a full section on that film, including a load of stills. Meanwhile, back in Losers' Alley, your biography would have had nothing about this most important film but a load of bluff and waffle. True, you've still got your 50 euros; but what good are they to you now? That is why Oscar Wilde called people like you cynics: you know the price of everything but the value of nothing.
It's my money, Tojo. I'll bid what I like, and you're not going to stop me. And I don't need you to tell me how much a pamphlet about a silent film is worth to me. If I want something bad enough, the market value will be what I pay for it.
I think you are just looking for an argument, so I shall put you on ignore.Small change can often be found under seat cushions.

So in reality, your maximum bid is not in fact a ridiculous amount at all, rather, your maximum bid turns out to be, that which you are willing to pay?

You again.
Well, yes it would to you, seeing that you and he are of the same kidney: you have nothing constructive to say, so you go around others looking for some mistake you think they have made and start pettyfogging the person who made the original post. Tojo didn't give any advice: the only thing he gave was grief, which is what you are trying to do, so you are going on ignore, too.Small change can often be found under seat cushions.
