I think I spotted the latest version of Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool finding and deleting Zlob? It'd be nice if it would.
  • Thanks Browntoa! So can I close HiJackThis, then?

If MalwareBytes has finally removed the infection, then why is my pc still displaying the wonky System Configuration box, as noted in my earlier post (below)?
I've just turned on my pc and the following message came on (some of the text is oddly displayed or missing - I've highlighted this in blue text - it looks as though this may have been caused by a missing (blank) strip on the right hand side of the dialogue box).

    System Configuration Utility

You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way windows . .

The system configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective startup mode causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts.

Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made during the System Configuration Utility.

[There is a blank box to check here that I can't reproduce on MSE]
Don’t show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows sta

Is it normal for this box to be displayed? It never has before when I've used safe mode in the past? Why is part of it missing? What should I do?

  • Thanks Browntoa - I've changed to AVG version 8.

Given Reluctant_spender's reply in post 37, [reproduced below] I then did a second MalwareBytes scan which showed that the pc was still infected (even though MalwareBytes said it had fixed it).
The box you describe can appear when you have unchecked something in msconfig for instance. Having looked at you last malwarebytes log these does not appear to have been a start up item removed so I am not sure why this has appeared.

Please start up malwarebytes and update it it prior to running a full scan.

Reluctant-spender was concerned about the System Config box, and as it is still appearing, it is still worrying me!

If its nothing to be concerned about, do I need to do as prompted and choose Normal" start-up?

    Thanks.
  • I think Browntoa has hit the nail on the head.

If you are running clean and the logs produced latterly would tend to back that up. I think you are good to go.

Run a full scan with AVG 8 and visit secunia inspector. This will scan you system against a database of the most popular programmes to ensure you are running the latest safest version.

Sorry if I concerned you unnecessarily.
  • Hi Reluctant-spender! You haven't concerned me unnecessarily - I value your help!

Given the persistent nature of the recent infections, I'm feeling a little spooked at the moment and it's causing me to be overcautious - sorry!

I'm extremely grateful for all the help and advice that everyone's given me on this forum - I'd have been up a river with no paddle, without it! Thanks again!

I've never heard of secunia inspector - does anyone have a link, please? Ta!
