text messages from strange people?

I am very protective about giving my mobile number out and if it is needed then I usually give my work one on forms etc. But lately I have been receving text messages from people I have not a clue who they are. I suspect from the content that they dont know me either but each message is carefully worded to get me to text back which I dont. More than likely its a scam whereby it costs me x amount of pounds to call it. I am not curious I am just concerned that I may be getting charged for just receiving these messages? can this happen? The messages are all from different numbers and one of them was mildly flirtatious the others saying things that its obvious they dont know me . They are now just annoying. I havent had loads maybe only 6 or 7 in a month but i have no idea where whoever they are has got my number from and how I can stop it from happening. any ideas ? thanks

It their coming from a short code (a 5 figure number) then you maybe being charged for them. If their coming from what looks like a standard mobile number then I doubt you're being charged anything.
If they are chargeable you need to send STOP back to the number their coming from.0 -
Hi, firstly you want to check if you are being charged for receiving the messages. Then you should read the message and see if it says 'to stop these messages send STOP to 80808 for example. I'm not sure where they could have come from, but it could be worth ringing your providers customer service. eg. O2/orange. to see if they can help. They should be able to bar a number for you, but if they are all different then it's obviously trickier.
Best of luck.

If they were all from the same number you could ask your network provider to block the number, but with them being from different numbers I think all you can do is ignore it, it'll either be a scam or somebody has given people their number incorrectly (either by mistake or deliberately). I had one like this with my old phone where a man had given his wife/girlfriend an incorrect number (you can imagine how please she used to be when a woman answered what she though was her other half's phone) and I'd get weekend text asking things like "I've got £50 can you get me an ounce", but it all sorted itself out after a few months (I think his GF kicked him into touch and he realised he was missing business)
good luck and just ignore the texts0 -
id just ignore them and delte them0
