Hi there,
I have been reading all the helpful comments on this forum regarding heating etc. However, I need further assistance. I live in a top floor flat overlooking a canal. Its always cold in the flat despite running the Dimplex 'box' like enconmy 7 heater on boost as it just not possible to stay in the flat by opening the vents. I have checked the loft and notice that it does have some insulation but not entirely sure its up to the recommended level.
My questions are:
1.Has anyone experienced something similar and if so, how was it resolved.
2. I have had a look on the Dimplex website and noticed that they no longer has my type of heating(probably over 15years old) on their site. Should I change to a modern electric heater and if so, any suggestions will be most helpful.
I am really desperate here and any meaningful advice will be appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

Storage heaters have their fans, but they're rubbish in my opinion. The advantage is they use cheap night time electricity. The main disadvantage is that they then only provide background heating and, although they've used cheap electricity, they're still not cheap to run.
I'm assuming you don't have the option of gas. Modern storage heaters are better (I'm told) than older ones, but you still might find, that is your property is hard to heat, they might not be good enough.
I think your only options are new storage heaters (not the cheapest option) or topping up the heat with plug in heaters (cheap to buy but then they use expensive day time electricity.
Meanwhile, the obvious things like heavy lined curtains drawn early, carpets with thick underlay and keeping doors of unused rooms closed will help, but it sounds as if you'll need something more than all that.0 -
Storage heaters were designed to be a form of cheap heating.
Councils fitted them in lots of properties with elderly residents, ie people who are more likely to be in for part of the day.
First:
check what the loft insulation really is like
The recommended amount is 270mm
If it is really old, or just really thin, you should get it replaced, its quite cheap to insulate a loft.
If its your place, or your landlord is willing to pay, look into getting the biggest windows double-glazed, if they arnt already.
Get the heaters serviced, the heating elements may be starting to go.0 -
Because of the canal it ussually is colder than normal,
and 15 year old storage heaters are a problem,
however do you have double glazing if not instal and
put a window insulation film. and put a bit more loft and
wall insulation. aircon is a lot cheaper to run than a boiler,
and for hot water there is a device than will generate hot water.:money:
