Soda crystals soften the water (so you need less detergent) and clean out the gunk (grease) and so stop the problem of things growing due to lower washing temperatures, although it is advisable to clean out the drawer, do a hot wash, and clean around the door seal regularly (thanks to Pigpen on the Flylady thread, I now wash the drawer in my dishwasher every couple of weeks).

Vinegar is good instead of fabric conditioner (and can be used on towels) and has the added benefit of descaling the insides of the machine as well. There might be a slight smell when you take the stuff out of the machine but it disappears when the laundry dries.

I use soda crystals/ecover powder/vinegar for sheets, towels etc. I use soapnuts (no conditioner needed) for my delicates/woollens/low temp and cold washes.

I have found that both these options are great for sensitive skin as there are no detergents or other irritant chemicals in them.

All our sensitive skin has reduced since I reduced how much we use aswell, leaves less residue on the clothes which is what I believe caused most of the irritation. Even ecover/similar used to cause it until I reduced what we use.

I like soapnuts too but use them on any lightly soiled garments
One day I might be more organised...........
