Soda seems to be increasing in price quite frequently at our Morrisons."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

I use 1tbsp of powder and 1tbsp of soda crystals.. my white sheets look fab!! The other benefit is that by using soda crystals you don't need to worry about scale build up on your washing machine as they deal with that for you!!Life....mmmm....still trying to figure that one out but what I do know is if I had all the answers it'd be a hell of a lot easier!!!!!!:p0

I switched to tablets or liquids and use half the amount. I've got a big 9kg drum on my machine so it takes two average size washes at a time. I'll still only put 2 tablets in not 4. No problems with my whites & I have 3 kids so stuff gets mucky
I don't like the liquitabs, they can't be split etc so you're forced into using a whole one. I haven't tried soda crystals myself but my friend, whose son wets the bed every night, swears by them for getting rid of the smell :T She just mixes half and half with her usual powder.

I use just a little less than half the recommended amount of powder and pour in a probably a handful of soda crystals (I get mine in Sainsbury's but they are well hidden on the bottom shelf of the laundry section).
I get good results too and a huge 5kg box of powder lasts for months. I am actually sad enough to write the date I open the box on the lid so know exactly how long it lasts - the last box lasted from June to end of November and that is doing lots of washing for a toddler too.0 -
I also use half the quantity and now always use the big box powders - alot cheaper per wash than the tablets and they don't go all slimy in the bag of the machine like liquids do. Also, I have used fabric softener for years but ran out the other week and had to wash without it. I have to say I couldn't tell the difference so I have stopped using it all together now. Never ever put it in the towels as it stops them drying you properly anyway.:pDawnie :j0

I use the 1/4 measuring cup for our washing powder, we bought a big value box of powder on offer for £10 when we moved into our house in August and we've still got just iver half left. Do you think I could get away with using less?
What do soda crystals do?*wonders when they will make dressing gowns acceptable day wear?*No new toiletries challenge - use up the stash first!NSD Jan 2/150 -

Do you live a hard or soft water area? And would that make a difference do you think?0 -
I use about a heaped tablespoon of washing powder and half a capful of fabric softener (sadly due to allergies I can only use comfort pure), and my washing always smells clean and feels soft.
I wash everything at 40 (the lowest my Smeg washer goes) but I do bedding on 90, not green or moneysaving I know, but I have sensitive skin and when I wash bedding on lower temps I get a rash. Plus as I can only use non bio I need the hot wash once or twice a week to 'clean out' my washer, as mould can grow at lower temps.0 -
A lot will also depend on your water hardness. If you're in a soft water area, you can get away with a lot less than if you were in a hard water area. I can't cut much at all without losing the resultsProud to be dealing with my debts :T
