TV broken less than 2 yrs - will Tesco replace/repair?

Hi,

My mother's TV (Technika LCD 20") seems to have broken. It is less than 2 years old - 1 yr, 10 months precisely - and hasn't had excessive use in that time. She still has the receipt. The screen is just grey and fuzzy - no picture and no sound. We thought it might have been her Sagem Freeview box but have unplugged that and still no signs of life. It isn't a problem with the aerial as an older TV works fine.

I know the standard guarantee is 12 months but this cost £250 and she really expected it to have lasted longer than this.

Pls does anyone know please anything we could try to fix it or what the chances are of persuading Tesco to repair or replace it?

Many thx.

You are still covered by the Sale of Goods act. Go to Consumer Direct for more advice, or Citizens Advice Bureau.

Even though you are outside the guarantee period, goods must be fit for purpose for a period of up to 6 years.

Unfortunately, if the retailer insists that the goods were of satisfactory quality, the onus is on you to prove that the appliance had an inherent fault at purchase. You can only do this by getting an independent report that states this. Then you go to the small claims court to demand compensation - you can claim for cost of repairs.
Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!
  • I also bought an lcd tv which was "branded", ie. bought previously and returned before, so I guess it would be second hand. The company (called Willen Trading who trade via ebay) said that the tv was only warrantied for 3 months.
After 14 months there is a permanent thin blue line vertically in the middle of the screen, suggesting a fault with the lcd. Am I covered under the S.O.G. act, and is there any way the answer can be emailed to me as I will find it very difficult to find this page again!!

Hey Chops, I think you mean "graded"

One of the good things about forums is that we can all learn from others. If any answer was emailed to you, that benefit would be lost to others.

If you bought it and it was explained to you that if was faulty then you cannot expect the seller to fix it. I imagine the possibility that faults were there was built into the price you paid.

Moschops It looks like the panel has developed stuck pixels if it was a PC monitor it would probably had an onsite 3yr warranty and the manufacturer has a stuck pixel policy regarding how many pixels and where is a fault. the panels are similar to PC monitors so this problem is more common than people think, but I have asked retailers what the policy is regarding telly's and the haven't a clue. You could ask the retailer and say that even *graded* stock should have a similar life expectancy as *new* but they could also blow you out.

There are programmes that attempt to fix faulty and stuck pixels on computer and laptop LCD screens.

They work by rapidly turning pixels on and off and/or flashing through the colour palette. Something like that anyway, I’m not exactly sure. They are not guaranteed to work but they can be effective depending on the cause of the fault.

Perhaps there is a DVD available that might be worth trying on your TV. Or maybe you could make your own DVD from the programme.

It might encourage your faulty pixels back to normal though possibly they don't work on a whole line of pixels.

Please don’t ask me for more details. That is about all I know.

    Google for more help.
  • Hi

Just a belated stumble across an old post - we did return to Tesco and to be fair to them they were great, no quibble at all - they offered an exchange or full refund. We had got as far as mentioning the Sale of Goods Act and were speaking to a manager but there was no quibble at all.

Although... bought another Technica from Tesco, this time it has built in freeview, and the screen keeps regularly freezing and sort of getting pixellated - it's less than a month old so not boding too well...

that sounds more like signal problems than problems with the new TV?

    but could be wrong
  • Hi Just thought I'd add to that last comment. A colleague recently had a similar problem and complained to Tesco. He didn't have a receipt but could prove that he'd bought it just over 2 years ago through a bank statement but I don't even think they were interested. They sent him a form, which he filled in, then they sent a cheque for the full amount (after saying that it may be pro-rata for the time they'd had it). He was really surprised that they didn't offer to just replace as the TV was a lot less now anyay.

    Hope it helps. x

Thats not faulty pixels. Clearly theres a problem with your screen. As youve bought from ebay id suggest just cutting your losses as dealing with ebay traders can be tricky at best

So the technika doesnt have inbuilt freeview? Have you tried plugging the sagem in another scart socket? Have you tried another feed (dvd player say)?
Are you sure the scarts seated correctly? And that its definitely on the correct AV setting?
