I am quite capable of configuring AVG - however, I beleive IMHO that Avast is a better product and is more flexible. AVG has serious issues with updates when using Vista with parental controls I have found during my time spent dealing with home pc and network support, whereas I feel that Avast has an easier to use interface and will happily update even on the most locked down user account. I hope this goes some way to clearing up any issue you may have in my ability - unless MS have started giving away MCSE's in cereal boxes again.

It is not irrelevant. If you don't use the servers that they specify, you can't expect the old server addresses to work for ever. AVG does not block e-mails if it is configured correctly!

They have not disabled the ntl smtp servers, and aren't likely to in the near future - at least not until they've informed everyone in writing (and then probably giving a long lead time).

I know my smtp settings still work, and i'm using the same settings i've been using for the past 8 years :)

RE the op, iirc sometimes an av programme will muck the smtp settings up, or wil use the "hosts" file to redirect them through the anti-virus programme for scanning, and not reset it when the programme is removed/updated.

Unfortunately as it looks like it's a problem with your machine's setting VM aren't going to be much help unless you ring their premium rate line - this is generally true of most ISP's, as once they've established that everything is working from their end (a faulty smtp server will normally cause a widewspread problem, and being able to use webmail means your password is right).

Are you using any form of proxy?
Most ISP's have their SMTP servers locked down to only allow users on their own network to connect to them, which can be why you are getting the "connection refused" message (same as if you're trying to use it whilst connecting via another isp).

I had an issue with AVG and outgoing email. The symptoms were, sometimes an email woudl get stuck in the Outbox and simply refused to be sent. I unticked the AVG option to scan outgoing email and it's sorted.

I'm glad it wasn't just me and the OP who had this issue. Always good to pass on personal experience/skills to someone when you can, rather than acting superior and knowing nothing - isn't that right Espresso ??
