Unable to send email - NTL via various email programmes

Hi,

We are having major issues with our email and hope you can help!

We are on NTL/Virgin via a cable modem and have 2 laptops connected via a Belkin wireless router.

Last Monday, my husband found that although there is no issue with the internet or his ability to receive email, he couldn't send out.
He is using Incredimail and AVG as his anti-virus.

On Friday I checked my email for the first time that week and found the same - I am using Outlook and Avira for anti-virus.

I phone NTL on Friday and found them to be their usual "helpful" selves - i.e not at all! After rechecking the settings (which we have not changed!) and getting me to reboot numerous times they decided it was our wireles router. So I connected my laptop direct via the ethernet cable and it still didn't work - emails could not send.

Rang them back again on Saturday and this time they were even more useless - as we are able to send and receive via their webmail service, they have now washed their hands of the problem and they have said that we will have to make do with that! Sorry, but we spend approx £88 a month on our combined services with them and that is not good enough!

I have now tried outlook express and Thunderbird and still the same result. I have done a full virus scan and run both spybot and CC cleaner and still no joy.

The error message I am getting in outlook express is as follows:-

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'XXXXXXXXX', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 aamtaout02-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [82.24.80.110]', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

Any ideas on what has happened and where we go from here?

Thanks,

VK

This is irrelivant. I am on virginmedia and am still using the pop and smtp servers from the old ntlworld domain.

OP - I have had this issue several times in the past, and found that it was AVG causing the issue. If I temporarily disabled it the emails went through ok. I have since started using Aast instead of AVG and have not had any issues since.
If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button

It is not irrelevant. If you don't use the servers that they specify, you can't expect the old server addresses to work for ever. AVG does not block e-mails if it is configured correctly!

Are you an ex-ntlworld account holder? If so you would know that the mail servers are still valid for ntlworld.com and that the virginmedia mail servers will not work - the details for the servers are here http://www.virginmedia.com/help/email/settingupoutlookexpress6-2.php#setup_ntl_server

When it comes to AVG, I have had plenty of experience in setting up antivirus and was stating a fact which I have experienced on numerous times. You do not know me so why do you think that I may not know how to configure something I have been working with in depth for a long time?

Someone who says "I have since started using Aast instead of AVG and have not had any issues since" is not worth listening to!

You have assumed that I am questioning your typing ability when in fact it is your inability to sort out problems e.g. configure AVG.
