Where to put all our photographs?

  • Yup, don't worry, i ticked that box and i put the ipod into 'enable disk use' mode. It's a shame the ipod has ruined my original folder structure, but that's what Apple does best.

My portable 2.5" HD went AWOL, otherwise i'd use that. Frankly, i'm more bothered about long term storage. How do i see my photos in 40 years time?

Black and white, silver halide printing. Only way to be sure

I need to have 200+ photos printed. Can anyone suggest a good online printing service, please. Any offering free prints for the first 30-50?

    Thanks.
  • I'm currently using an external 320Gb hardrive in an enclusre but i'm now seriously considering buying one of these and then whacking in two 1TB drives.

The great thing about this enclosure is that it offers RAID 1 (aka mirroring) which means data is copied to both hardrives. So, if one drive fails i'll have all my photos/music etc on the other nice and safe.

TB drives have come down in price too, ~£80 each.

    I personally have 20gb of photos/vids covering 5 years:

    I have:

    a. All my images/vids are stored on a external hard drive.

    b. Same file is also on my laptop.

    c. So they aren't just sitting on a drive, each year i make a dvd slideshow ie all pics set to music and in chronological order of the years events and then the home videos kick in. I also give these out as Xmas presents to the parents and in-laws, so they can see their grand kids adventures over the year.

However, if this is not for you, you can buy a media player, which is a hard drive, which you can also hook up to your tv and view the files direct on your TV.

After researching I've concluded that the online photo storage is good but doesn't offer the capacity we'll need, and upgrading to a pro account with our chosen host to increase the storage capacity would cost a lot more more in the long run than waiting till January, buying some external HDD and saving photos onto them, plus also backing up onto dvds. I've also found some good websites that can print photos...

Thanks everyone for taking the time to answer my question! :T

Flickr is $24.99 a year (£16 in today's money) for unlimited storage.

How is this more expensive than buying an external HDD?

    ...unlimited storage and free!
  • Just a quick bump for this, those who store their photos online with winkflash and others, do you not worry that one day it just won't be there any more??!!! I'd rather a 'known' name to store my photos on?

Just saying as I've searched this as I have many many photos and need to find where to back them up to.

A dvd holds a lot of photos, best not to put all your eggs in one basket, copy on disk, copy on external disk, copy on DVD, copy on web.

  • Hope its not to late to say "If you don't have more than two copies, then you don't have a copy at all".

Cheapest route I guess is to Dual Layer high capacity DVD. One copy to your Mum, One to a vault and one to a friend to keep for you.

I have x2 HDD's inside the pc with all photos on both and monthly I back up to my Samsung Story Station

I've had good quality DVD's not read after a few years, but I still have plenty of old 20gb and 40gb HDD's that are over 5 years old and still going strong.
