My photos are backed up to my Yahoo Mail and Gmail via Shozu (straight from my phone) + Dvd.
I also had an ext hard drive which failed, so I will be getting another one soon
Remember to login to your yahoo account periodically - I recently tried to access some records in a yahoo mail account, and as I hadn't used the account in three months the account had been suspended and upon re-activation the content had all been deleted.
I backup my jpeg files to flickr, and my jpeg & RAW files to both dvd and external hard disks.0 -
I copy all my images to a new external Hard Drive each year for archiving. As I'm not using them on a daily basis, I'm hoping they will still work in 20 years time. I also copy to DVD but I don't expect them to last more than 5 years. As the price of 8GB memory sticks has come down, I'll probably start copying to those, too.0

16 GB Sandisk Cruzer memory sticks (arguably the most reliable out there) just £17.99 at Amazon now. I've ordered a couple, but not for archiving photos ... still too small for my requirements.

For the most reliable home backup, I'm a great believer in USB External Hard Drives. I currently have four LaCie drives varying from 250GB to 500GB, plus a Fujitsu USB HandyDrive 300GB, with a further Fujitsu USB HandyDrive 500GB currently on order.
I use these in rotation for making regular (weekly) backups of all My Documents, including my huge photo collection (I keep original RAW files as well as the processed and down-sized jpgs from them).
Typically once a month, but no longer than two months, I use Norton Ghost to make a complete Ghost 'mirror' image of my C: Drive to my second internalDrive and when complete, I make a copy of it to one of my external USB drives. This has saved my bacon no less than four times this year when hardware faults and / or viruses have crippled my PC. Just overwrote the C: Drive with the last Ghost image and I'm immediately back in business with a safe setup again.
The price of all USB external drives has been coming down, and with the current woes in the retail sector, look out for some amazing bargains after Christmas.
EDIT: Oh yes, forgot to mention, for sharing photos with friends or just exhibiting them for public viewing, I have an account with Pbase ... http://www.pbase.com/davecq
Dave.
Thanks Dave; was supposed to be uploading my photos this evening thanks to everyone's great advice on this thread, but spent far too long admiring your photographs, especially the cats and cars!0 -
After researching I've concluded that the online photo storage is good but doesn't offer the capacity we'll need, and upgrading to a pro account with our chosen host to increase the storage capacity would cost a lot more more in the long run than waiting till January, buying some external HDD and saving photos onto them, plus also backing up onto dvds. I've also found some good websites that can print photos...
Thanks everyone for taking the time to answer my question! :T

I bet that took a while. It's probably not the most efficient way of backing up photos, but if that's all you have available ... well, any port in a storm eh.
One thing you do need to be careful of, when using the iPod for photo backup, is to make sure you tick the box which instructs it to transfer the original files as well as an iPod viewable file. The need to do this is because, for viewing on the iPod screen, your photos are converted by the iPod / iTunes software into a special format ... and your photo files are significantly altered.
Ticking the box to transfer and keep the original format files as well, will ensure you have a true backup, at the cost of iPod disc space of course.
