I recently closed my Amex account (for various reasons), but I did enquire about whether I could have a chip and pincard a couple of months ago. They told me I could only have one when my present card expired which was in 2008!

But why do you need C&P cards? Its been posted already many times, retailers should not refuse a card because it has no chip and they have no additional liability when doing so. It is only if they accept a chip and pin card without a pin that they accept liability. Is the lack of a chip causing you any problems?

FWIW my chipless Amex has almost two years to go until it expires.

Some over zealous checkout staff are under the impression that they can only accept cards with a PIN number. Wonder what they will make of chip & signature ?

Only because I believe a chip and pin card is safer as, unless they know you're PIN, they will be unable to use it in a shop after 14 Feb.

Correct me if I'm wrong please.

I rang Amex a few months ago about this and was told that all Amex cards would be replaced with Chip and Pin by the middle of this year (2006). But who knows?

Only if the shop has a C&P terminal, otherwise they will still accept signatures.
  • What is the situation with Tesco? Another thread seems to suggest that they are going c&p only as from now. Anyone had a problem?

Tesco insisted it is taking steps to protect the interests of disabled shoppers. It said: "We are sympathetic to the needs of customers with disabilities. Shoppers who need an alternative to a PIN can request a signature-only card from their card issuer.

"If they come to Tesco with a signature-only card it will be recognised and accepted."

They previously said by the end of 2005, does it matter?
Today in Home Bargains, who dont accept Amex btw, I had to sign as they do not have c&p terminals. Seems like some businesses are not too bothered about increasing their running costs. ;)

...But I keep hearing that retailers aren't going to accept non-C&P cards after February.

And, only today, there were notices up at the Asda petrol pumps saying that Chip 'n' Pin was being installed on the pumps on 19th Jan. So, does that mean that (non-C&P)Amex cards won't be useable on those pumps after that date?

No, if you have a C&P card you will have to use a PIN after 14th Feb. If you do not have a C&P card you can continue to sign as usual.

That is a slightly different situation as you cannot sign for these transctions so they may stop acepting non-C&P cards.
