  • When I was gorwing up (in country Austrlia) we had not had any proper rain for about 5 years. The water was putrid it would come out of the tap with mosquito larve in it. My mum used to squeeze fresh oranges, lemon or line into the water. Also a couple of ice cubes in it always made it better. My mum would not buy cordial unless it was a treat so however horrible our water was if we were thirsty we drunk it.
  • Hi
When my 2 were small I gave them diluted juice occasionally but not for every drink. They had their milk, then with meals I always put a jug of water on the table and we would only have this. I explained other drinks would alter the taste of the food. I think it helped that the adults drunk the same as them. Also when they had friends to tea who usually had other drinks I carried on with the water and this was soon accepted without question. I think the fact it was part of the table setting made it more acceptable, spoons forks, glasses (plastic or cups for littlies) and the jug of water. We still do this now and my two are 15 and 18. Also maybe as previous posters have said the fact of putting in a jug gave it a chance to lose some of the tap taste. Whenever we were going out we always took bottles of water filled from the tap. Again the adults had the same and it was never questioned. Also one time the children were bothered by insects and I told them they go for the smell of juice or lollies and that made the water far more acceptable for general useage. I don't think you need cut their squash out altogether as this will count for some of the required fluid intake but maybe alternate for a while, after they have a squash drink say the next drink must be water? Good luck.

  • I think OS water comes from a tap, not from bottles, flavoured water or squash. My grandchildren now aged 14 and 9 were raised to drink only water and milk and they have never been tempted to drink and of the sugary conconcotions like pepsi etc which most kids drink by the gallon ( sweetners are not OS because they may cause other problems). Fruit juice might sound healthy but is very heavy on allbeit 'natural' sugar and isn't very good for you - a piece of fruit is better.I wish I had done the same with my own.
