Keep tap water in a jug for about 30 minutes after you draw it - that will allow the dissolved chlorine to gas off. That will make it taste better.

We've got a filter tap - that makes a big difference to the taste. Otherwise a filter jug is a good investment.

Hard water tastes nicer than soft water in my opinion.

3 litres of squah isn't bad - £3 a week maybe?? Compare that to how much you spend on beer or fags....

A lot of bottled water is just tap water anyway - In fact, if it doesn't say MINERAL WATER on the bottle, it probably IS tap water (or its equivalent).

Withabix - that is nonsense and I suspect you know it!! There are strict rules relating to MINERAL water - it certainly used to be that the same didn't apply to SPRING water, but whether that is still the case I wouldn't know. You seem to be suggesting that Tesco, Asda et al have some kind of "Peckham Spring" type production line set up in their warehouses - quite honestly I don't think that's really the case!

Gailey - if you're getting through that much squash in a week then it sounds like by default you must be getting through a vast amount of water between you! If the squash is sugar free and you can afford it then I wouldn't worry too much.

    Have corrected my post now.

Seriously though, the 'Peckham Spring' is closer to the truth than you think.

Many of the supermarkets own brand bottled water comes from artificially drilled boreholes near Armathwaite in Cumbria, from a factory called Eden Springs. It is pumped from the aquifer using electric borehole pumps and then goes through a similar chemical treatment process to mains water. Bottled, this water costs upto £1 per litre retail.

Half a mile away, the local community is served by a similar borehole in the same aquifer and the water goes through a similar treatment process. For customers on a meter, this costs around £1 per THOUSAND litres.

Remember Dasani - bottled water from Coca Cola.....that was tap water from Kent.

    The labelling rules are here:

Re the coca-cola issue - yes,and REMEMBER the storm over that one?!

Ahh I forgot the dasani incident what a mess that was and never relaunched!
Witabix I will be cautious with my choices. Peckham spring made me chuckle I loved that episode!

Both me and my hubbys love our squash quite strong so get through it bit faster and daughter always drinks it throughout the day hence why we get through so much! But yes is a saving as if we have pop or juice hubby drinks it all straightaway!
On the squash front we get robinsons sugar free which I assumed was ok but now been told its bad as got atricial sweeter apsa something in it which is bad for kids so will just buy normal robinsons which I dont but cheap sqaush as all additives and robinsons usually on offer somewhere!

But reason I want to cut back ad drink more water is health reasons as we are meant to drink 7glasses or 2litres a day as could for our digestive system and skin to stop us getting dehydrated other juice drinks l/coffee /tea do not give us enough water by itself espoecially if it contains caffeine which dehydrates you further.
Alos I think its good for daughetr to get used to plian water as be good habit for life and shes always thirst and running round like toddlers do so dont want her to get dehydrated or hooked on fruitshoots/pop like some kids are would rather her mainly drink water and milk with squash or juice as treat as its good habits for life and both me and oh need to lead by example.

As for matter of h2o I prefer bottled not sure if its because its genuinally nicer or just phychogical evian and brecon carreg close to my homeland my faves however thats when water becomes pricey habit hence me wondering is tap water ok if I get filter or cheapy water in aldis seems quite reasonable think its italian though.
Any water consisurs out there who know their water?

Tap water is more strictly controlled than bottled water and as it's fresh from the tap no worries about where and how long it's been in storage.

I find it almost impossible to drink plain water and have done ever since I was very young.

So long as you are drinking sugar free squash you will be just as well hydrated as if drinking plain water (with no tooth damage to worry about) so no need to worry. It's actually a bit of an urban myth about other drinks not hydrating you (will try to find the link I saved). In regards to artificial sweeteners you have to consider the small amount actually in a cupful of well diluted squash - it really is very small.

I live in a very hard water area, and I used a Brita water filter jug (till I dropped it and broke it) and it does make the water taste nicer!

If you are concerned about the amount of squash you get through can I ask do you make up cupfuls as required?

I don't. I always try to keep 2 or 3 bottles of different flavours made up and chilled in the fridge. I've found that if the squash is chilled you can get away with it being a bit more dilute, it's also easier to measure how much squash you make up and get through (and overall it tastes much better to me)!

Also I think the quality of the squash does effect how much you get through. I can drink cheap lemon or black current when pennies are really tight, but cheap orange is horrid.

Personally I quite like Asda's selection and it's better value in the big bottles.

If I'm ever in Tesco they do a good value offer on their bottles of high concentrate squash - and its very tasty (and you really don't have to use much).

The high juice squashes are some of the tastiest but also sadly the most expensive, Asda's fruit and barley are pretty good value though and a nice flavour.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

I dont knor if it helps. but we use a water filter and it does make a difference, re squah could you change it to high juice drink, slightly less additictives.

I use to drink squash to the cows come home, and go through fizzy cans as well, but now after drinking chilled water, I use the high fruit juice squash, and have it really watered down. x

    HI OP

I don't buy squash etc for my household as I find we kind of get addicted to it and start to need it for every drink. Instead I buy proper (but own brand) OJ and apple juice and dilute them for the occasional drink. However we mostly drink water, and the adults also have coffee (decaff as I'm still b'feeding) and herbal teas as well.

Anyway if you really can't drink just plain water try frozen lemon or any citrous fruit steeped in boiling water and cooled that's lovely. Also similarly try cooled fruit teas.

However it's way more moneysaving to stick to plain water! Some prefer it ice cold and others room temp and others hot...so try all combinations on your family to see which they prefer.

Finally it now seems that you really don't have to glug through pints of water each day to keep properly hydrated - you should also get fluids from alot of foods you consume so apparantly it is better to drink when you are thirsty and not force yourself to drink all day so that should make you feel better :0).

I don't know if nyones mentioned it - have only read the first few posts- but you say your daughter is always thirsty. have you had this checked out? It is one (of many) indications of diabetes. Don't want to worry you but if she id drinking a lot more than anyone else then it may be something to consider.
