gps receiver for laptop...............

Options
hi,

I need some help.

i am looking for a gps receiver for my laptop to use with autoroute 2005.

it has to be NMEA 2.0 compatible.

i havent got the faintest idea what ones are any good so i will need a lot of help to find a good one.

im not looking to spend a lot on one but will pay a bit more for one if it will do the job for quite a while.

can anyone recommend any for me?

thankyou in advance.

I am sorry that I am unable to answer your question but was just wondering whether it would be more practical and probably better value for your money if you get an all in one GPS unit like the Garmin i3 for around £150 which you can use for navigation and speed camera locations without any need to use your laptop.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • not really as i am looking for it to use for my laptop cos i always have my laptop with me and it could work out cheaper that way

    have you already bought Autoroute?

... if not, it's in PC World in a package including a GPS receiver, and reduced to £99.99
  • yeah i have already got autoroute on my laptop.

is the gps receiver with that package any good or is there a better one for a decent price?

please help as i need it for the end of this month when i go away.

i just thought having a sat nav on my laptop would be good because then it has a lot of countries as i will be travelling out of this country and therefore wont have to update another sat nav with more maps.

does anyone else think this is a good idea or would it be better to buy a proper sat nav?

    thanks

  • I use GPS and laptops regularly with Autoroute and Memory Map.

    You have 3 options:
    1) Use a bluetooth GPS and a bluetooth dongle. I have tried and tried and tried and still (a year later) not got it to work reliably.

    2) Use a PC or PCMCIA card (same thing) that slots in the side of the laptop, depending on the model (SIRF II or not) and the position of the laptop in the car will determine if you need an extension antenna. Advantage is that if you run the laptop on batteries and a SIRF II GPS then there are no wires.

    3) Use a USB GPS, plugs into the USB port and has about a 1.5m cord so that it can be positioned anywhere.

I use a laptop in a Discovery and have a small ‘table’ over the automatic gear selector with the power supply underneath (get a cheap 400w inverter and then use your regular power supply or get a 12v laptop power supply from Maplin https://www.maplin.co.uk for £30.). I have hidden the wires for everything and takes about 30 seconds to connect all and be ready.

If you have a new car that has a solar reflecting windscreen (Peugeot are worst) then you will need to experiment to find a place that the antenna will work. You may need to get a remote antenna on the rear shelf or similar as the solar reflection also reflects the GPS signal. However would recommend getting the SIRF technology as they will receive a bounced signal rather than having to directly ‘see’ the sky. The USB GPS in my Discovery works best in the very bottom outside corner of the windscreen, move it 6" and signal drops off, though it is not SIRF. I have a Bluetooth GPS for my PPC (IPAQ type phone) and that works when clipped to the roof lining side of the sun visor.

Hope that helps you, if not ask the question or PM and I will try again.
