Firefox or opera come down to personal choice , if you are happy with IE7 then stick with it , ALL 3 browsers have had serious security problems at points during the year , so theres no 100% on any of them.

I'm sitting here using IE7 despite haveing Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome because I prefer it. I'm careful about what I download and the sources and "touch wood" have never had a problem

SP3 just shuts a load of security holes...looks exactly the same as before

lol, this is going to sound so thick again but i have to ask what is the router?
If you're using a router, I'd enable the firewall on that.

    thanks again,
i don't want to change to much, just enough to make me more secure, i like IE although not tried anything else.i'm careful about what i download to, not really sure where this spate of attacks came from.like you said though nothings 100%, what firewall do you use by the way? and what do you think of spyblaster.i noticed quite a few people have it.
do you think i should reinstall malware?

I still use an old firewall called Sygate as it works for me and still does not fail firewall tests

    http://www.download.com/Sygate-Personal-Firewall/3000-2092_4-10049526.html

download Malwarebytes again if you have problems , its more vigorous on infections than others at the moment but theres no need to keep it on the pc

I don't use spyware blaster but its meant to be ok

    hi
i'm on dial up with a external modem, so i don't think i'll have a firewall for this.learning a lot tonight lol.

the thing you plug the pc in to get broadband, it's either a modem or a router. routers give better protection automatically

i'm glad i posted here now, this has been so helpful and ive learnt alot.
i have saved link to malwarebytes to favs for future, that a good idea i'll download if/when needed or maybe even 4 a monthly scan .i think i'll leave blaster for know as thats more of an extra, will sort sp3, avg and firewall first.will stick with IE for the moment i think although is there a newer version or is there no need.
    thanks again

    ever considered broadband?

    hi,
not really don't like the idea of pc being contected to the internet all the time.may sound daft but feel safer bring able to switch it off when done and turning pc off at the mains.

i've just noticed the spyware terminator has anti virus protection(internet protection section), via activating there web security guard database, any one know if this would clash with avg anti virus before i activate it.
and can i run wins firewall together with another or best to only have 1

no need to install AVG 8, just remove the old 7.5 version as you don't want to run 2 antivirus products at the same time

I'd turn off the Xp built in firewall if you downlaod another one

SP3 will take quite a while on dial up

you can get a friend on broadband to download it and put it on CD

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en

then run it from the CD
