is this setup ok

i have had a few problems with trojans mainly recently, plus a few others. ebay account also supposed to of been hacked ,although looked ok.
(i have win xp sp2 on pc with wins firewall.)
i did some searching on here on this is what i did.
i downloaded spybot search and destroy and malwarebytes.
already have avg 7.5 and spyware terminator.

then i disconnected from the internet ,put pc in safe and turned off system restore and scanned with malwarebytes, spybot, avg and termintator.so all were clean.
next i restarted pc in normal mode and turned on system restore again.
forgot to add also changed passwords etc on site i use.
was this correct thing to do?
did this all last night, pc was abit slow this morn, although was when using ebay so may have just been them. uninstalled malwarebytes as thought this may be slowing things.

i know have the following on pc:
windows xp sp2
windows firewall
spybot s&d
spyware terminator (realtime off)
avg anti virus 7.5
microsoft phishing filter

how does this setup look to you techies.
was thinking abt another firewall, which would be a good one for my setup.also was thinking abt spyblaster is this worth while and will it slow pc?
and lastly as my avg is quite old which free avg version is a safe one to download?

sorry for long post, greatful for any ideas

  • The software I have is as follows:

    1. Anti-virus = Avira AntiVir
    2. Anti-spyware = SuperAntiSpyware (rubbish name I know but one of the best in its field)
    3. Anti-malware = Malwarebytes
    4. Firewall = Zonealarm

I'd suggest you initially uninstall any programs you don't need anymore. Then download and run CCleaner. Reboot then finally do a defrag of your hard drive(s) (guide - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314848).

If you're not already using Firefox then download this too and don't use Internet Explorer.

your version of Xp is out of date , Xp is service pack 3 now , running Sp2 leaves you open to trojans so go to

    www.windowsupdate.com

choose "express" and do all the updates (you may need to do this twice to get them all)

    avg Free 8 is here

with the malware, i know this sounds thick but does on demand mean i run it when needed. as when i had it installed yesterday when i clicked on icon to put a scan going a message popped up saying it was already running:confused:

ditch the out of data avg, and try avast or antivir

malwarebytes won't slow the pc down, it's an on-demand scanner

on demand means as needed ,it may have said it was still running as it sometimes needs to delete things on reboot so it may have been sitting there in the background

whoops put an extra "s" in should have been

checked through programs and emails, did a disk cleanup and disk frag which said no need to do as 80%.
i am on IE7, this is going to make me sound thick again lol.but IE7 is just the page that i ping up with my homepage/google on, so if i change it that is all that will change isn't it? and do i keep it on pc or delete it when installing something else.always very nervous abt changeing to much.

If you're using a router, I'd enable the firewall on that.
  • Got to recommend Firefox or Opera over IE7
