Laptop screen does not come on

Pretty much as the title says. My Laptop turns on, when i say turns on i mean the lights, light up on the keyboard, however the screen remains black.

It started doing this last night and so i turned in off and on a few times with no joy. I have had it off for 12 hours+ now, i have just tried to turn it on to find the very same thing still going on.

It is less than 1 year old and is a HP.

Any help appreciated.

Have you accidentally switched it to send to an external monitor? Usually a Fn key.
 Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:
  • Will try that now. Fingers crossed.

I just wanted to add also that i have not dropped it or banged it, it was sat nicely on the top.
  • Have pressed the fn key and nothing changes.

That would be the fn+f5 key usually! (look for what looks like a monitor on one of the "f" keys)

Could be a faulty screen, backlight or inverter. The inverter would be the cheapest to fix, but if you've exhausted all other possibilities, then your nearest laptop repair shop might be the best option, not PC World!
As a guide, I got an inverter fixed for £35 a few weeks ago.

I would check and see if the laptop is under warranty still, as its less than 1 year old.

If you give me the serial number/product number, I'll look it up?

Have sent you a PM. Big Thanks by the way.

The laptop was bought in April and so is surely still under warranty. I have never done anything bad with it, dropped it, banged it so would be so annoyed if something i had paid £550 was broken in that space of time.

I also have an hp laptop which developed the same problem just out of warranty. As previous poster said the only way I could get the screen working again was to remove the battery for a minute and replace it.
It still has the same problem now so I have to leave my laptop open all the time - or take the battery out as above. I looked the problem up on google and it seems it is quite a common problem with certain hp laptops.
  • Oh thanks for that, will give it a go.

To be honest though 8 months in and i am still not happy if that fixes the problem. Should something you pay for, take care of break down after such a short amount of time? I also do not really want to have to do it again and again so will likely take it up with HP anyway.
