Help new modem /Virgin internet and cant get wireless router to work

Hi

can anyone give me some guidance please, had an old modem with virgin and has been replaced with new modem now, had to get virgin to release the old modem and assign new modem.

Internet working fine when modem direct into tower, however, when I connect the wireless router (Belkin - model FD7231-4 - High Speed wireless G Router), into the pc and then the modem into the wireless router I get nothing.

so basically I have cable from PC - Router and then cable from Modem to Router - also need to connect sons XBOX 360 to the wireless router so he can get on XBOX Live - all worked before new modem installed.

Son is driving me nuts... any help appreciated :D:D:D

Is it as simple as resetting the router? do I need to follow any steps, will I need to reset up the password to access the wireless connection? and if so will I need to introduce laptop other pcs again?

Many thanks in advance

  • It's worth powering down the router and modem, waiting fifteen seconds and then restarting them both. The router might still be latching on to the IP address that the previous modem was assigned.

Give it a go and report back.

You need to turn both the modem and the router off, and disconnect the modem from the router/pc.
Then turn the modem on, wait about a minute or two till it settles down.
Then connect the router to the modem and turn it on.

Due to the way the VM cable network is set up it "remembers" the last device connected to the modem, so you need to power down the modem when changing the connected device, so it resets (you can generally only change between 2 devices* in a 12-24 hour period).

Assuming the router doesn't get reset (usually a recessed button on the back, or an option in it's menu), you shouldn't need to reset the passwords etc as they should be stored in flash memory on it rather than RAM (a bit like your computer doesn't need it's basic settings redone every time you power it down).

*Although you can repeatedly swap between them as long as you power the modem down at every change.

will give this a go when I get home, although everything was switched off and disconnected when I put the new modem in, but will give it another whirl, if it doesn't work I am playing loud music so I don't have to listen to my son moan he cant get on XBox live :D:D

Configure your own router e.g. change it's SSID from the default value, enable the WPA encryption and then configure your PC's so they connect to your own router. All of this is explained in the router user manual.

Well people could at least read the manual and try to configure their router before posting like sheep! There is even an invisible sticky at the top of this board containing lots of information on the subject.

What I so admire about you is that you come back here, every day, always helping everybody who posts a problem, undeterred by the fact that so many of them then get their kit working and just bu66er off without giving you a word of thanks or even bothering to press the little button.

A little understandable tetchiness from time to time is thoroughly excusable in an :A .

    :)

would read the manual if I knew where it was :D:D , as it was set up some years ago and its only since installing the new modem it does not appear to be working correctly - ie showing secured.

I know how to introduce the PC's throughout the house once I have configured the router again, just thought I might be missing a trick and so thought I would ask someone who might be able to assist.

    thanks
