The problem with Asda staff discount, I think, is that it is only supposed to be for the card holder. My daughter has a part-time job at Asda and has bought things for me on her card, but goods must be bought with cash or with her credit card (mine cannot be used).

Perhaps some MSE'ers who work for Asda will be able to advise.

I work for ASDA & would advise your daughter to be careful as if she is caught buying things for you using her discount card she will be sacked. The card may be used by 1 other person than the member of staff, that person must live in the same house as the member of staff (or colleague as they are called in ASDA)& be a relative/partner of theirs.

I have no idea where you stand with regards to this faulty item & discount, personally I think the issue lies with the ex-colleague abusing the card but would imagine trading standards would not be too bothered about that issue rather than the faulty goods not being exchanged/refunded (this is just my personal opinion though).

i would go to a different branch there are loads about and just say it's not working and it was bought as a present so you havent got a receipt please can they help! the whole thing about the staff discount is complicating everything and you are still being honest it was a present you just want same again or something to similar value!! obviously if it has gone in sale now then you have to accept sale price value as they are doing a favour reallly without a receipt! hope this has helped thats what i would do!

I agree that the issue of the staff discount being abused seems to be their main concern rather than the faulty item.

Thank you for your suggestions regarding returning to different stores without receipt but I think I will just chalk this up to experience. Apart from the fact that I lost money on this, I was more upset with the attitude of the CS people. At one point there were three of them involved, with one being very very hostile and patronising, implying I was an idiot.

I will just vote with my feet, as we have Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Somerfield all within 10 mins drive away.
  • I have to add after a number of problems returning various items to asda in the past I have switched my shopping to Tesco. Although I still have issues with them from time to time, returning items at the customer service desk so far has not been a problem.

    1. If your friend has left the company - how are you supposed to supply the discount card - your not...
    2. Asda electrical products have a 12 month guarantee on them so returning should not be an issue.

Advice - Go in the evening when the part time staff are in. Some of the collegues seem to think they're giving out their own money so be friendly and explain the situation again. You could also go and get the replacement product before you go to the CSD. But be friendly - the amount of a-holes that they see everyday....

I don't think there is any reason for you to lose out on this, they were shirty with you as they feel the staff card was abused, but if you do as other posters suggest and take it back without a recipt they will change it for you without a problem.
I bought some things from Tesco's to use up some spend £15 get £5 off vouchers that were about to expire, but then I was out of the country for a while and when I went back to Tesco to return these items they wouldn't refund because it was outside 28 days, even though they were still selling the items at the same price I'd purchased. This was fair enough it is their policy. So I took them to another store without my receipt and got a gift card which was all I needed as I was still going to be spending it in Tesco anyway.
For faulty items they will either refund or replace it is your choice to have a replacement or your money back and you wont need the recipt.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

Hi, i'm new here & work for Asda! I'm sorry you've had this trouble, you're not to blame, neither is Asda, your friend should've known better! If an item is returned with a receipt we have no choice but to refuse to refund it if a discount card has been used & isn't there as we can't take the 10% back off without it. Asda are very very strict with us on use of the card & if the colleague had even put it onto a gift card for you he or she would've lost their job. I suggest taking it back (If it's within a year) to another store without the receipt & they'll happily exchange it or refund onto a gift card if it's faulty. Good luck

There is a legal issue here. An earlier poster said that if it's faulty you are entitled to a refund, or whatever. I don't think that this is the case here.

The Sale of Goods legislation has always applied principally to retail sales. (There are a few bits relating to private sales though.) It does not apply in the same way here, because a staff purchase is NOT regarded as a retail sale, so Asda are within their rights to offer only limited redress.
