Exactly what I was thinking, realaledrinker... sounds to me as if you DID use all those things you could save yourself £12 pm..... mobile insurance alone is like £5pm isn't it?
EDIT: OK so I am not a big fan of packaged accounts, I only have one because it is free for staff but if I had to pay for one, smilemore looks excellent, esp with the choice of 'Traveller', 'gadgets' and 'safeguard' on top of your standard benefits!

protective registration for a one of fee

    http://www.cifas.org.uk/default.asp?edit_id=808-85

For an annual administration fee of £13.80 CIFAS offers a service, to protect your name and address from being misused in this way.
When you request 'Protective Registration', a CIFAS warning flag will then be placed against your address marked Protective Registration which indicates the individual has been recorded on the CIFAS database at their own request for their protection. CIFAS members when undertaking a search against your address will see "CIFAS-DO NOT REJECT-VALIDATION REQUIRED", whatever name they search for.

Richard Cocks - I hope you are not including the Free ID Protection Method?

Free ID Protection is the only PROACTIVE fraud deterrent system available that works with ALL lenders. It doesn't rely on passwords that can be compromised. The real bonus is that in the unlikely event someone uses their biometric to steal your ID, then you're in the clear, and you can point the finger (pardon the pun) at the perpetrator (no other system achieves this).

CIFAS (The Credit Industry Fraud Avoidance Systems) Protective Registration is fine and is designed to protect its (Industry) Members, but beware, not all lenders are Cifas Members.

CIFAS Protective Registration is an annual subscrirption, not a single payment.

CIFAS Protective Registration is basically a password based system.

Both Free ID Protection and CIFAS Registraion can slow up the application process. This IMHO is a small price to pay for extra protection.

Free ID Protection could and should make the whole application process quicker and safer, but this is a matter for the industry to tackle.

If you use all the perks to a packaged account then it could/would be worth it.

Mobile phone insurance, you can get on your existing home policy. I have and it doesn't cost any more.

Multi-trip travel for 2 people for 1 year you can get for around the £40 mark (don't know about kids though, as don't have them)

Unlimited experian 1 person is £60. But do you really need to check your account more than 5 times a month per person? If not then the £2 a go deal is better (for one person).

Breakdown you can get via AutoAid at £37 per year - incl everything u get with greenflag. (one car though, yet technically, it's the person that is insured not the car, so you can use one AutoAid account with unlimited cars - just like you can use one greenflag account with unlimited cars - unless the limit it to a specific car).

Overall just on these costs comes to £137 and that is if you take them out individually. Then if you don't check experian more than 5 times per month, say once a month it brings the cost down to £101 and if you don't go on multi-trips you can bring it down further.

End of day, I say that IF you use everything that the account offers you. So you check experian 6-unlimited times month (don't know why), you go on more than 2 holidays a year and you have a car - then they might be worth it.
If you only check experian when you open an account, go on 1 holiday a year and don't have a car - then it's definately not worth it.
  • Products like this may add to your peace of mind, but in reality they are liable for any losses due to ID theft, not you. These products add almost nothing that a normal bank account doesn't have.

The bank isn't liable if someone uses all your details and basically becomes a carbon copy of you to open an account or credit card or whatever with another bank. That's just silly.
What makes you think ID theft often requires legal help to overcome? Report any suspicious activity to the bank as soon as you notice and they will deal with it.

Would you like to try and convince a CC company that the person who just opened an account that uses your name, your address, your details, your ID and has basically become you is not actually you, without any kind of legal help?

At any rate, the OP wants this protection, and me and one other (who suggested Capital One) have suggested ways he/she can get it for free. They obviously would like the reassurance.

Please understand what you are talking about.

Debit or credit card fraud is NOT identity fraud. The latter is more complex and harder to sort out.

I would call it ID Theft.

If someone uses your plastic they are pretending to be you. Ater all they are using your PIN, forging your signature or using your card details. You could call this account takeover. (ID Theft).

If someone pretends to be you by applying for a plastic card in your name then this is application fraud. (ID Theft)

I would conclude that the only type of plastic card fraud that isn't ID Theft is whereby the genuine cardhodler themselves claim a transaction is fraudulent when it isn't. Hence the dilema card issuers have when it comes to fraud committed with a PIN.
