  • Other places to go if you have transport - lighthouse museum at Fraserborough, aquarium at Macduff, transport museum at Alford, Scottish Wildlife Trust centre at Montrose. A bit further away but worth going across to Aviemore for a couple of days - Strathspey Railway and Highland Wildlife Park at Kingussie and Highland Adventure Park in Carrbridge.
  • Ive stayed inAberdeen quite a lot stayed in the YHA once and was pleasantly surprised. we got a family room, on suite shower room, Nice breakfast every morning or you can cook your own. Clean, modern, nice people, and very reasonable. If you have a car you can visit Balmoral the Cairngorms the highlands, couple of nice seaside resorts not very far. and a lovely park near the city center.Plenty of shopping Malls etc. Once you have been there, youll want to go back.

  • Satrosphere is a MUST!!! The kids will love it and I'm sure you will too! The Maritime Museum and the Marschal College Museum are really different and not like your useful stuffy old museums!!
If you are hiring a car I would head up to Fochabers (about an hour's drive) and visit the Baxters Factory for a tour, the kids will love the old shop and the huge pancakes with some famous Baxters jam. If you do that in the morning you could then head to the Glenfiddich Whisky Distillery (about 20 mins form Fochabers) for the afternoon. Great guided tour and free dram at the end (orange juice for the kids of course).

  • Hi there

Thanks for the spreebooks link, great help.

I have lived 25 miles south west of Aberdeen (Great place by the way) for 4 years and did not know about them, although I know someone who has one for Dundee.

I have a holiday letting with my home, and it would be great for me to get one of these books so that guests can see what is about.

Also lots of links to great places for people to visit, which I shall add to my quest info - thanks a lot.

It may be of interest that there are 4 places that I know of in Aberdeen where you can get an all you can eat lunch for around a fiver, as follows:-

    Pizza hut currently £3.99
Blue moon (Indian Restaurant set menu) £5.99
    Jimmy Chung's £4.99 (weekdays)
    Thai Buffet (my favourite) £4.99
Shariz Not sure of spelling Indian £4.99

    Go eat

  • A good place for self catering hols in the area is Holidaylets.net where you can deal direct with owners, there is what looks to be a few nice ones some with fantastic sea views, if that is what rocks your boat.

Book early though, because some are fully booked for the whole of the school summer hols already.

Have a great time, wherever you stay and whatever you do.

I would recommend Glamis castle, interesting building and lovely grounds etc. There are lots of other castles to visit, as well as distilleries etc, if you want to indulge the adults for a bit of your stay.

And the Brechin Castle Centre might be nice for the kids.

Nice but pricey, can you believe you have to pay to get out on to the field of grass?? I think thats awful!! And dont let the kids run around, i was walking around with my mum and brother and my jacket caught on a row of vases knocking them down like dominoes!!! My mum was affronted and ran, my brother helped me pick them up and thankfully only one was broken so we walked around holing it looking for someone so i could pay for it and we never did find anyone so my little brother just put it on a shelf out of reach!!

Have been back since and didnt go anywhere near the breakables!! lol

If you're a fan of the film Local Hero you could visit Pennan where it was filmed. Not much to do but it is quite breathtaking. You could always get your photo taken outside the phonebox. :D
Gardenstown is not far from Pennan and if you're into scenery then there's plenty there.

You're makin me laff - "affronted"? Truly an Aiberdonian expression. To all readers who are planning to visit Aberdeen, this means embarrassed........ will probably be used quite often by locals.

Aye, roon the cockles o' ma harte!

We did Crathes Castle on the one and only day of Sunshine we got last summer and I burnt my tender bits (ouch!). We did a picnic and had a great day. Kids loved it cuz there's an adventure playground, a little cafe with afternoon tea (ooooooooh! - chewin' the fat!) and the toilet was a porta-cabin (lovely) as they were doin up the other one. Good day though. Nippy with sunburn and shattered with laffin! Wot a tonic! :0)
