Thailand Visa help required

Could anyone help me please, my wife and I are visiting Thailand early Jan 2009 for 5 weeks, and we've just found out that the maximun stay is 30 days, does anyone know what the best/easiest way is to extend our visa's ?
Thanks for your help.

Easiest way is to leave the country and come back in again, typically to Malaysia - aka 'Visa Run'.

Very easy to organise from Southern Thailand, or maybe pre-book a cheapo Thailand - KL return on Air Asia.

  • Depending on the actual amount of days you are going to be over the 30 you may be able to apply for a visa extension at the office near Lumphini Park. It is about 1000 Baht (it was, you will need to check that though) and you got an extra 7 days which would cover you fine.

I did it a few times, but i was at the time travelling on a multi entry visa obtained from the consulate in Hull. I am not sure if that made a difference, i always did a border run on the 30 day normal visas.

Will you be going out of the country at any point or are you planning on spending all your time actually in Thailand?

Infact i would say give the consulate a phone and ask them what is the easiest way.

Tel: 01482 581668 is the number you will need.

http://www.thaiconsul-uk.com/visas1.asp is the visa section, its huge though, but if you do want to look through it then you may find some info that helps.

Actually, the 30 days is the time that you can stay without having a visa. It is called a Visa Exemption.

If you wish to stay for more than thirty days, simply apply for a Tourist Visa.

If you live in London, you can visit the Royal Thai Embassy.

If not, you can send your passport to one of the Consulates.

Forget about the 'crossing the border' advice, it's far too much hassle.

But, yes if you cross the border and come back in again by land, you only will get a visa waiver for fifteen days.
Not at all good if you decide to visit a nearby country after a week and when you get back you realise you will overstay as you only have fifteen days.

Enter by air and you get 30.

Take my advice and get a Tourist Visa. It allows 60 day stays, extendable in-country by another thirty days.

Surely, you don't think that they will spend their trip in Krungthep(Bangkok)?

Visa Exemption extension is 1900 baht(over £36). It's cheaper to get a Tourist Visa before you go.

Would one really want to be spend a good part of a day of their holiday in a provincial immigration office and have to fork out nearly £40 each in the process?

Sometimes I have to wonder about the advice given here, even if well meant.

It doesn't take much to check the info before posting, especially if you are trying to help.

You can apply for a 90 day Vida before leaving the UK. It costs £45 and you will need to send your passport to your local Thai Embassy. I think mine was Leeds or Hull and they sent it back within 4 days, stamped etc.

Otherwise take a trip to Lao, but be aware you need to allow costs for flights etc, and it's $28 when you get off the plane in Lao for their Visa. To be honest travelling to Laos was a massive faff on. So I'd suggest a Visa beforehand.

Excuse me, i think your little rant was uncalled for.

I actually said to check the amount, as it was a few years since i had done the extension in Bangkok. It did not take me a day to do it, it took minutes, but obviously from the tone of your post this has now changed and it takes all day. I must remember to check when i am next over so that i can give an exact time for that process.

The info about the border crossing given by others was valid up until 2 days ago, it was changed overnight. How was the poster to know that they would decide to drop it to 15 days for overland border crossings.

I also, if you read my response, suggested the option of the tourist visa from the consulate, i actually gave the telephone number and the website. Which leaves me wondering why people come on here and post the same info that has already be posted previously.

    Rant?

    Jai yen yen

But if you insist on being pedantic..... ;)

You did suggest that they went to the Suan Phlu in Krungthep. They would have to be in Bangkok/Krungthep in the first place....

Plus they would still have to make their way there, take photographs, fill in the forms pay £36 each.... It would take at least half the day.

Obviously you just 'teleported' yourself there if it just took you a "few minutes". ;)

Again, it's a 30 day Visa Waiver or Exemption, not a "30 days normal visa".

At last but not least, you assumed that the Hull Consulate is the best one for them. Which the reason I posted a list of ALL of the UK Consulates. Certainly not a re-post of your limited information.

Nevertheless, it wasn't a rant. It was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. ;)
  • Ok, im laughing because its pathetic disputing this, and to be fair you seem a knowledgable person.
I think it is a wise move to keep you on side, just incase i ever need to know anything at all. :p

Hopefully the OP has enough info to make a choice that is best for them and their needs.
