Why are they only on Fords?

2 litres of water from the hot tap melts my windscreen everytime.

as long as the water isnt too warm. if it is it could crack the screen.

other manufacturers use heated windscreens aswell i think.

I've never cracked one in over twenty years, and I always run the hot tap until it's as warm as possible, say about 50 to 60 C. And I've done it every time there has been frost.

I never dared to put hot water on my car's windscreen ever for the fear of breaking it, I may try to use warm water for this winter. I now have a 10 years old fiesta which has the heated front screen element so that is great, although I think the screen still need to be scrape and use de-icer on very frosted screen.

The bmw mini also are under licence to use the heated front screen, I would like to see most if not all the manufacturers have the licence to all make these heated screens, perhaps paying ford a small fee for the rights. I can imagine the fee ford are charging for this right is huge as most cars don't have it.
  • Scandivian's generally use a small piece of flexible plastic slightly thicker than a credit card and a pair of golves.
Come winter time business give them out with adverts on them.

Of all the things I've ever used it's been the best.
    Funny that.

Another vote for warm water, never caused any problems with the windscreen. The 4 pint milk bottles are better than using a jug as it's less likely to spill on the floor if you're in a rush.
