Malware/Spyware Removal Guide

just updated the Malwarebytes part of the guide following some information from Knarf44 :-
I have always given the advice based on info found in the Malwarebytes forum, here.
That advice states quite clearly that a quick scan would pick up 99.9% of infections and that the Full scan option is there simply to provide reassurance.
Towards the end of the thread it also addresses the point that MBAM should always be run in normal mode rather than safe mode. The latter should only be an option when the program can not be run in normal mode.

Adaware probably found tracking cookies which are nothing. Dont assume everything is malware or a virus
If you wish to continue, please start a NEW thread. Open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the WHOLE of the log in your NEW thread
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log in your NEW thread so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)
If you get a message that you cant write to the hosts file then Press the SHIFT key, and whilst holding it RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (admin):idea:0 -

Once you get rid of the malware / viruses you should also install free anti virus from Microsoft - it's called Microsoft Security Essentials
I run free AVG and Microsfot Essentials and together they do a very good job.0 -

You shouldnt ever have two resident av programs running together (especially with AVG being one of them):idea:0 -
Haven't had any issues with running both at the same time? Why is it bad to do that?0

I have a general question. I've seen lots of posts concernig malware/spyware etc and there's lots of programs mentioned including malwarebytes. I have Norton Internet Security (version 18.6) running on my XP machine and had assumed that I've been well protected. The question is, am I still at risk from malware/spyware and should I also be running other scanners?Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0
