Leaking toilet

Hi,

My toilet is leaking slightly from the cistern into the bowl. Please could you tell me how this can stopped? It's one of those dual flush types.

Many thanks.

If you can see which joint it is leaking from then take that joint apart and put a new seal in. B&Q and others sell packs of various sized seals for a few £.

If its a joint with no seal or other problem then buy some silicone sealer and smear it all round the joint. You will need to tie up the ball !!!! and get the joint dry for this to work well.

Also check there are no cracks anywhere.

what type of toilet is it? i.e. is it a push button on the top of the cistern lid - with a small button and a larger button together - or is it a lever on the side type of toilet?

if its a push button on the top, if you can remove the cistern lid, you may find a white flush valve in side with a overflow pipe to either left or the right of the valve body, if you find the water level has risen and the water is spilling into this over flow, you need to replace the ballvalve/washer on the ballvalve (ballvalve should be on the left hand side of cistern).

if you post back and tell what the ballvalve looks like or even post a pic, we can then best advise you how to rectify the leak!

however just check the ballvale and flush valve to make sure theres no grit ect, stopping the valve closing properly.

    hope this helps, Bruce2110
  • Thanks Xbigman, thanks bruce2110. I'm away from home at the moment but back tonight so will take a look inside the cistern and post back asap. (It's a push button toilet with a small + large button together).

    Many thanks,

    Tom
  • In addition to the above, sometimes the diaphragm that sits under the drop valve doesn't sit properly, or debris unseats it, letting water flow into the pan.
In the case of low-level back-to-wall pans with concealed cisterns, the biggest problem is people leaving the vertical section of flushpipe too long which lifts the diaphragm off of its seat.
