Not an answer to the OP, but I have a question too. Do you have to renew with the original supplier, or can you renew elsewhere cheaper?

You have to transfer the domain to the other supplier. Letting it lapse simply reverts it to the original suppliers ownership and any new supplier would have no access to it. If you want to take advantage of another supplier's prices (although some suppliers do actually charge for transferring away which ironically is an indication of a rubbish registrar and one you'd definitely want to move away from), features etc then you'll have to transfer the domain before it expires.

Personally I use ukreg/fasthosts for all my domain registrations and hosting.

I use 1and1.co.uk, some people have had bad experiences with customer service, but I have several domains with them and have never had a problem.

    Same here, never a problem
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

I, and lots of my associates, use gandi.net; £6.00 ex. (French; 19.5%) VAT for two years.

Importantly, the first line of their Terms and Conditions is "You are the owner of the domain name".
