I am not sure if this has been mentioned before but Tesco mobile
http://www.tescomobile.com/valuesim.aspx
have a value sim costing £1.73.
They also do the value sim for £1.73 buy £5.00 credit and get £10.00. So for £6.73 you get £10.00 credit on your new sim.
I have a eight year old who likes to text some friends. He only uses it a few times a week so this is ideal as texts costs 5p each.
He is too young to be allowed to use his mobile for phone calls (who knows what it will do to his brain but that is another issue) so I only let him text. I thought that this was good value at 5p a text.
I got him a Nokia 1100 from Amazon with a t-mobile sim costing £19.99 with £5.00 credit. The phone isn't locked.

Ideal for an 8 year old who will probably loose it soon!!
