A quick short sharp puff/blow of air on the cat's face when they are doing wrong is very effective and harmless. It certainly stopped my ginger tom biting within a few days0

I think that's fairly normal for cats- our cat does it often, sometimes he gives warning with a swishy tail etc, but sometimes not. The book The Emotional Lives Of Cats by Jeffrey Masson talks about this too, and he comes to a similar theory as the one in the FAQ that Hectors' House posted- that if they start feeling relaxed they often feel vulnerable.Owing to financial constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice.
