                    Hello,
Having suffered problems with our Sky+ box for a long time now, I finally rang them up and said if they didn't fix/replace the box, we'd cancel.
The guy came out today, and replaced the box, all now seems to be working fine so no problems there.
My question is, I am sure that I read (a long time ago now, so may be out of date) that after 12 months a Sky box becomes your own property. This is why they try to charge you for engineers after 12 months. I've also read previously that if you get a replacement due to a faulty box, the engineer will often offer to take away the old one for you - very helpful, except that he only does this so that he can sell it and keep the profit for himself.
He insisted when he came today that he had to take it away. Is that right?

Sounds right to me.
Even if it was yours after 12 months you wouldn't sell it would you as you need it for sky tv and sky don't give you a free box every year.0 -

Well I'd actually wanted to keep it so that:
1. I could watch the remaining programs on there, which I have now lost.
2. As a backup in case the new box went badly faulty - the old one still worked, but often crashed and lost everything, but would have been a handy backup.
If this is now the Sky policy then that's fine, it's just based on what I've read on MSE before (as I say, this was a long time ago now though), I thought the engineer was pulling a fast one.0 -
Yes the engineer was correct and its always beens Sky's policy , if Sky come out they exchange your box for a refurbished one, the faulty box then gets refurbished and put back into stock.
The £65 is the call out for the job, if you did not let him take the box away then Sky may charge you for it as they have no box to refurbish.
The box is your from day 1 BTW not after 12 months.
If you say upgrade from Sky+ to Sky HD then the engineer has no right to take your box away, some installers have been pulling a fast one in these circumstances0 -
Thanks deanos. I guess that must be what I was thinking of!0

No its your box, the only time they can take a box away is if they are sorting out a faulty one.0 -

Ring them up and threaten to cancel if you have been with them years saying why should the loyal customers get nothing when new users can get one free.0 -
