Ok thanks.
So, it's off to the Fire Cement Shop I go tomorrow and then find a handy male to fix itor female...is it difficult? I mean, could I do it?

Janey, B&Q stock fire cement, I purchased a tub for less than a fiver at their large store near asda Edinburgh. Fire rope I had to purchase from another place further along seafield, as for DIY, I see no reason why you cant, just make sure you wear gloves when handling fire cement, try to lay your hands on surgical type gloves for dexterity.

I will call at B&Q tomorrow and get a carbon monoxide detector as well. TBH, my house is so draughty that any fumes are probably blown away anyway!0

Before you part with £30-£40 for the detector, see if your local Citizens Advice/Fire Service/any other helpful organization are giving them away, or discounting them.
British Gas were discounting some time back http://www.house.co.uk
