Disaster. Log burner falling apart.

Sitting in front of log burner when realised room was filling with smoke. Had a look round the back and could see a length of what I presume is the insulation sealing the stove to the flue hanging down.
The log burner was put in 3 yrs ago by my DH who died in June. Chimney swept in September and the sweep took the burner apart to clean it all out so maybe he hasn't connected everything back properly.
What on earth can I do bearing in mind how bad the forecast is? (live in Scotland)
Can I glue the insulation back on?
Do I need special stuff?
I can't move the burner at the moment because it is still red hot.

Just what I need after all the problems I have had lately

Just done a Google for repairers in Scotland - big place, I know - http://www.stove-experience.co.uk/ was first up.

Worth calling them, maybe they'll offer some advice.

There are lots of rules & regulations, on stives these days, so you might need to get someone to do it 'properly' for you.

The smoke, in a room is nasty & dangerous stuff!!

Thanks for taking the time to do that. I may have a cunning plan...lol
Landlord is sending someone to fix the central heating and I am assured that any plumber worth his salt should be able to reapply the asbestos tape. Hopefully he will be worth his salt and if I slip him a tenner...

Get a carbon monoxide alarm, it sounds like you need it. Don't trust that a plumber will do the job, because unless he knows about woodburners he will know nothing about it.
Bit confused though, if you have a landlord why isn't he sorting it out?

    Sorry thanked rather then quoted.

I think you will find many years ago it was asbestos rope type stuff. Now it is a sort of fibre glass stuff.

    Evening Janey,

As others have stated, you are viewing fire rope, which acts as a gasket around the various joints used in a m/f stove, this should be used in conjunction with fire cement to make sound smoke free joint's where required.

Landlord died suddenly this week. Very sad.
Have lived here a long time (over 10 yrs) with no increase in rent :D because any jobs that need doing, DH did...but he died 5 months ago.
We put the log burner in so really it's up to me.

Sorry to hear about your landlord :(

If its just a matter of the stove rope that has started to fall out of the seal then you could try pushing it back in and then sealing over the joint with fire cement putty.

Either that or invite an male friend round for a cuppa and ask them to do the job while they are there (buy the fire cement putty first) ;)

No, I would thoroughly clean the gap where the rope goes, put fire cement in that, then push the fire rope into it.
