£30 deposit not showing in bank

Hi

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, couldn't see where else to put it.

My partner has paid £30 into bank earlier today, about 2 1/2 hours ago and it is not showing, he didn't put it in an envelope and post it, he says he paid it over the counter.

I have rang Barclays and they said they can't see it either. He's not lying about paying it in but I'm wondering if maybe he's written the account number down wrong, if this is the case, what happens to the money? Does the cashier check the name matches aswell? Will I get my money back?

Is it a cheque as if it is, that takes time to show up on the account? If it was cash it should show up straight away so get your boyfriend to go in there with the receipt so they can have a look into it.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

I paid a cheque in and it did not show as paid in until the next morning.

  • Bank account numbers use a clever mathematical system called "check digit" which means that if you put the wrong number down there is a 99%+ chance it will be rejected as an invalid account number. It isn't like getting wrong numbers when you phone somebody. As a result of this banks do not check account names.
  • The cashier will have to balance their till at the close of business, if it's showing a difference of £30 then they'll go through the paying in slips and tick them off against a print off of the tills transactions.
    That should sort it

I have just been into the little branch downstairs (I work in a hospital) and asked the cashier, she said that if he's written the number down wrong there's probably nothing I can do! I said shouldn't it have come up with the wrong name? She just said depends if they bothered to look.

I need to get the stub/receipt, but she said he could have just asked to pay it in without filling in a paying in slip in which case there's no record of it whatsoever! I thought you had to fill in a slip? Otherwise there'd be mistakes all the time.

Anyway, I don't even know if he has given the wrong number yet, I doubt it, I'm waiting to speak to him and I'm praying he's got the receipt.

The reason I had asked him to pay the money in in the first place is because I'd ordered something and been overcharged by £20 which sent me overdrawn so I was trying to get the cash in to cover this, now I'm going to be £30 down and still get charged!

He should still have a receipt. I bank with Barclays and they always make me fill in a paying in slip before paying anything in. and give me the stub back as proof.

That's total rubbish, the transaction will be on the tills records, as long as he know what time, roughly, it was paid in then it can easily be traced.

They can search by time of transaction and amount and if it's been credited to the wrong account it can be reversed and re-processed.

Ring the branch where the transaction took place and speaker to the counter manager

Spoke to OH, he has the stub and definitely the right account number.

I went back down to the little branch and spoke to a different cashier, told her which branch it was paid into and that it was a male cashier etc, she rang the branch and it turns out their BT line is cut so they can't process the payments from there and will have to go through another branch, if I get any charges they will refund them.

Thank god for that! I can't be doing with anymore money worries, still got presents to buy! It would have been £30 missing then a further £16 in charges.

    Thanks for the replies.

So this was presumably a cheque. Just for future, you have nothing to worry about unless it appears over night.

Branches can (and do) process cheques, cash only credits, mixed credits, etc. right up to 7.30 at night, so it's not unusual to see cheques not appearing for a good few hours after they're dropped off.

The bank's overnight balance isn't actually calculated until 9pm, and that's when you need to start worrying about charges. You can overdraw yourself by a million pounds every day and we don't care provided it's back at the end of the day. :)

    Do you work for Barclays?

If so, when I worked in a branch my CM3 was a completely useless tosspot. His CM2s did all the work, so I took great pleasure in rating him as a D. ;)
