For me to get to the administration alone, I would have to go into safe mode.
I have re-installed WinXP2 with no control over firewall settings - ie same as before.
Or is there another way of getting to admin mode?

No disrespect, Albertross, but I did look up help sections first b4 moaning which is not something I do very often.

:oIf I fail to thank you individually, I am sorry. Your advice was appreciated but may not have been 100% the result I was after.

Ok, thats fine, but without the benefit of ESP, I don't know what you have done, or know, or googled. All I/we can base advice on, is what you have posted.. Advice will quite often be irrelevant, but that's the nature of remote diagnosis, lot's of blind alleys..

An answer to every problem posted on this board can usually be found on the internet, but sometimes it easier to ask for help/direction.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • See below.
    Sorry. Editing messed up.

    What is ESP?

I am still stuck without a properly working firewall,
I do not know how to get to my original administration account setting other than through safemode (which I hate using but may well try that now to try and activate my firewall),
    &
I do not use google search - I much prefer typing in a word or two in my address bar and letting my pc do the rest.

Automatic updates is doing its thing right now.
I know for certain that when upgrading two items had question marks on them because I interupted the process.
Let's hope my latest update corrects that - nope not corrected.
Went into safemode and my Administration account, where I accessed my firewall setting in control panel.
    Below was what I got
"Windows firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service?" Y/N?

Upn yes I got the below
"Windows cannot start the windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ICS) service"

I wish to correct this please plus getting into my administration account without using safemode.

    Anybody know how?

    Again,
    what is ESP?
    That could mean anything.
PC time is not something I have a lot for hence all my questions. Better to be safe than sorry.

ESP = extra sensory perception - or the ability to know what some one is thinking....... my wife uses it all the time..... come to think of my daughters try as well...... :D

it sounds like your XP2 install is screwed, have you managed to get a disc from pcworld?
when/if you do, do an uninstall of xp2 before trying the reinstall from the new disc
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • Have aread of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892199/?sd=RMVP&fr=1

The first solution offered is to enter (at a command prompt)
    SC sdset SharedAccess D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

I can honestly say I have never seen such a command in my life.
For more information about the SC sdset command, see Windows Help

    Err, no thanks.

I was equally thinking the same - my installation screwed that is.
No I have not been to pc world and doubt I'll be going there to buy. I was quite happy with XP1 until I failed to protect my new broadband connection and the heavens fell on top of me.
I did uninstall and then try re-installing xp2 but nothing fixed the problem. Something must have stayed in my registry.
I am sitting on the edge of my seat right now cos I have experienced the bad side of not having a firewall.
Think I will download the industrial version - it's free after all :silenced:

Will let the masses know how I got on with that one which was my original thought before size made me do a rethink.
On 1MB broadband, I think 1hr tops should be enough to allow me to download that 266mb file.

  • No differences with the industrial version - still no firewall.

Have gone back to XP1 with all the latest patches minus KB890046 & KB893066 which are both security patches that refused to allow my pc to reboot properly.

I may sound ignorant but there will always be threats to one's pc no matter how much protection you give it.

The most important thing is to have some protection. And I have that!!!

After many many problems with my machine after installing sp2, I finally rang Microsoft who informed me that some pc's with athlon processors in have serious issues with sp2, and at the time (middle of last year) there was no known workaround. They were extremely helpful and talked me though the uninstall etc.
Not sure if this is relevant to you but it might be worth giving them a call.
I now take the chance and don't download any updates - am using firewall on pc and router though.
