Child not being offered place in Reception

I've seen studies that show a difference in achievement between Autumn babies and Summer babies that persists right up to degree level. Of course, that's only averages so some Summer babies will be high achievers and some Autumn ones won't be.

I am born in October and went to school a year early, and I can assure you it did no harm to me, I was the second best in class until I moved to a special school for gifted children (don't mean to boast), and even then was in the top half of the students for my school year. I went on to uni to study maths and got honours in that. It all depends on the child. I was a book worm and my mum asked librarians at school not to give me any books!!! (Didn't work). The summer holidays (it used to be 3 months in my place) or any other holidays during the year was the worst thing ever as I wanted to go to school!!!!
Forgot to add - the only reason I got in to school together with August babies was that my mum was working in that school in that time and she managed to get the headmaster to agree to it... It was a bit of a shock for me when I started as I missed my year in preschool (they got fish poisoning there one day when I wasn't there luckily and my mum decided that I won't go there anymore), so when I started I couldn't read at all or write, and the first task on the first day was to write word 'Mum'...Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
hi, sorry to crash in - but is this true? my DD was born 30 August 07, so of course shes still only 15 months but do you think she will suffer from being the very youngest in the school year? i'm dreading leaving her at the school gates already......!
I think suffer is a bit strong:D
My DD is a high achiever, but she's had to work alot harder than the other older children to reach her full potential as it all started to kick in later.
Now she's in year 3, juniors, she find the older girls don't want to play the same games as her anymore, and they seem so much more grown up than her. Not that that's a bad thing, i think they grow up too quickly nowdays anyway, but I do sometimes feel sorry for her.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
My son's birthday is 2nd October so he was almost 5 when he started school but I can't recall thinking too much about it to be honest, perhaps I should have been wondering why he wasn't starting school the year before
I lot of people talk about him being at an advantage being the oldest in the class but tbh he has had the same amount of time at school as his classmates and there seems to be little difference between them at this age (his class is 23 boys and 7 girls  )0 -

I'm surprised this has only just come to your attention!
Please don't worry, my niece has an August birthday so youngest but she certainly hasn't suffered as a result (in fact opposite she is top of the class)
I think as other posters are suggesting it depends on the individual child.0 -
I live in Scotland and I'm so glad my dd will get 2 years of nursery and will start school at 5years 2 months.
Think the cut off for August start is 4 years by mid February.TRYING hard to be a good money saver :rolleyes:0 -
My eldest has birthday in middle of August.
He was always one of the youngest in the class, always one of the brightest as well BUT he struggled socially sometimes at age 6-7 as he was a bit silly and fidgity and didn't want to play the same games as the other kids.
He caught up eventually and was voted head boy in sixth form and managed to be accepted to join the Police a couple of months after he was 18 because he has such good communication skills !
Middle son has early October birthday and has always seemed very mature for his age compared to class mates.
The thing is they born when they are born and the schools have rules which can't normally be changed. so we just have to get on and adapt to it as best we can.
My friends son has 31st August birthday and she managed to get him put back a year and has never regretted it he's 16 now and I think that was the right decision for him but most of us don't have that choice!

DS was born in June, so will be 5 and two months when he starts primary 1 in August. I was 5 and 1 month when I started and did fine. TBH I think it is sad to 'avoid' having a baby in a certain month because of school intake- the child just starts at the next available intake- no big problem surely ?
My nephew started at 4 and a half and was actually in a class with p1's (his class) AND p2's- he has had no problems and is doing fine.Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

My son was a July baby.....and he thrives at school
A lot depends on the child, to be honest.
You can't change the rules of school admissions, so do your best, enjoy the time you have, and don't worry about it too much. Worrying isn't going to change a thing, honestly
Just to point out that children don't have to legally start school until the Sept after their 5th birthday. My childs birthday is August and I wasn't prepared to send him to school at 4yrs 2weeks when all the other children were five already or near to it so I kept him back till the next year. My son's teacher recently told me that she wishes more Mums did this as staying at home that bit longer can be so beneficial. Doesn't do for everyone I'll admit but it was great for us and I'm so so glad I did it as he started in year 1 and has thrived

Hi sorry to butt in, but can I ask a silly question, whats pre-school ?
My DS has been going to nursery part time for 2 years, he was 3 in Oct, so will be going to school sept 2010. I've been told he will get the 12 x 2.5 hrs childcare vouchers in January that my nursery will deduct from the bill, but from what I can gather, pre school at our local school is where these vouchers can be used, but they are only open 9 till 11:30 and 1:00 till 3:30, which is no good to anyone who works. Is this pre school, or is there something else my son can go to thats full time other than nursery ?0
